February 2009.

Thirteen years had passed after that. I haven’t had a chance to go back to Kyoto again. I never visit the forest since that day. I don’t know what had happened to Rumi after but I do hope that she’s alright.

I’m now on my last year in high school. Being one of the most outstanding students of the school, I gain so much fame. Everyone treated me differently now. They treat me kindly and with honor.

But only four remained the same and they are my best friends: Kota, Kei, Hikaru and Daiki. Like me, they’re also popular but in different ways. We’re always together. They’re the only ones to whom I could share my worries. Of course, I’ve told them everything about Rumi.

On the same month, the annual school festival was held. During the event, the five of us roam around the campus to observe and have fun. My eyes caught the school gym. We went there. There was a band of three people playing, two boys and a girl playing alone inside the gym. I could recognize the girl since she belongs to the other class and I had a crush on her for a month already but I still don’t know her name so I asked Daiki.

“Dai-chan, do you know who’s that girl?” I turned to him to ask.

“Oh, she’s Yamami Miru. Why did you ask?” Daiki answered.

“You don’t know? Yuya had a crush on her.” Hikaru was the one who answered.

“Eh?” Kei was very surprised. “I thought you liked Rumi.”

“I do but she’s just a childhood friend.” I lied. I do like Rumi since then but I became confused of my own feelings when I saw that girl.

“Better stay away from her Yuya.” Daiki warned me.

“Why?” I’m very confused.

“She’s not a good girl Yuya. Everyone hates her.” Hikaru answered. “She has a behavior that no one could stand.” He explained.

It’s already the middle of the day yet I still couldn’t understand what Hikaru had said so I just kept quiet for the whole while. We’re walking along the school park when we saw her with one of her band mates sitting under a tree. They’re having a conversation.

“Hey Miru, what are you doing?!” The boy asked her. I saw her holding some cigarette butt as if investigating something.

She stood up and approached the two boys who are about to pass by us. “You!” She shouted. The two boys stopped with fear. “How many times will I tell you to stop smoking inside the school premises? Also, you’re just first years!” She’s filled with anger. The boys’ hands reached their pockets, brought out their cigarettes, gave it to Yamami then ran away.

“Miru, you scare them again.” Her band mate told her.

“I just taught them something, Kazuki.” She answered back.

“In front of him.” That Kazuki guy pointed at me. She began to shake but I don’t know why.

“Whaaaaaaaaaat?!” Her other band mate had arrived. “Ignoring me and giving him all your attention? That’s unfair Ru-“

“Shut up Kazuya!” She cut his statement. After that, she was about to walk away but accidentally tripped on something.

I caught her and held her tight. She looked at me with unreadable face. I loosened my grip on her then she ran away. She fell something on my foot when her band mates followed her and I wasn’t able to return the small notebook that she had dropped.

“What’s with her?” I asked dumbly.

“She likes you, of course! Isn’t that obvious on her reaction?” Kota answered then we noticed that Kei’s gone.

The day after, our group decided to have an overnight at Kei’s house. I’m the one who arrived first but before I knock at the door, I heard him talking to some people.

“Kei, I know that I’m worrying too much but I’m afraid to tell him.” A girl’s voice emerged. I could recognize that voice.

‘Yamam’i, I thought. ‘But why is she here?’ I asked myself.

“Don’t be afraid, I’ll support you. And it will be better if you act as yourself not as another person.” I heard Kei said.

“I’m sorry about yesterday; it almost slipped out of my mouth.” That Kazuya guy said.

“Kazuya, you better shut your mouth when we’re outside.” Kazuki scolded him.

“By the way, I think I dropped my notebook when he grabbed me yesterday. If he looked inside that notebook, he will know who I am.” Yamami said talking about possibilities.

“Better.” Kei assured.

They fell silent. After some moments, I fixed myself as if I had just arrived and knocked at the door. Kei opened the door. As I entered the house, I saw an empty living room.

“Were you with somebody before I got here? You seem very serious.” I asked him.

“I’m with no one here.” Kei answered. Just by then, Kota, Hikaru and Daiki arrived.

The next day, I arrived in school earlier. I planned to return Yamami’s notebook. I still haven’t got a chance to look at it even though she said that I would have a clue to know who she really is with it.

I came to her class. “Is Yamami-san there?” I asked her classmates.

“Yamami? That evil girl? She’s not here.” One of them answered.

“ Have you heard the rumor?” Another asked.

“What rumor?” I confusedly asked.

“Every year, on this same day, she’s going to someone’s grave and prays for that person’s soul. And it was said that the soul she was praying for was a person that she killed.” The other one explained.

I got more confused. Kota lightly hit my shoulder. “What are you doing in some people’s classroom?” he asked.

I ignored him and spoke again, “Could you give this to her when she returned?” I handed one of them her notebook when I noticed something fell from it. A picture. I’ve seen that already. I suddenly remembered the things happened thirteen years ago. The same picture that she gave me. The same picture that I lost a month ago. When I got to my senses, I grabbed the notebook from her and ran out of the classroom.

I heard Kota say, “What’s gone into him?” as I ran away.

A week passed after that day. I remember what happened during that same day thirteen years ago, the day when we, Rumi and I, separated our ways.

I came to school, as I enter our classroom; I caught a glimpse of Yamami. She passed by going to her class. I stood up and ran towards her ignoring my friends who called my name.

When I reached her class, I called her name. “Yamami!”

“Takaki-san, why do you keep on looking for her? She’s not yet here.” Their class adviser said. I’m sure that I saw her came in but she’s really not there.

After a while she came, “Gomen ne sensei, I’m late!” She got surprised when she saw me there.

“Rumi.” I uttered. Her eyes went wide open. I noticed that she’s not wearing her school uniform but a white blouse and skirt, same with her shoes and I don’t know why.

She smiled the smile that I’m longing to see. “Yuya.” She said my name. “At last.”

When I’m about to approach her. Kazuki and Kazuya came. “Rumi, Minayama-san is coming.” Rumi walk towards the window. She saw her father entering the school campus.

“Who are you? You’re not from this school. What are you all doing here? CLASSES ARE ALREADY STARTING!” The teacher shouted.

Kota, Hikaru and Daiki came. They were totally confused on what’s happening. After a while, Kei came to the room with Rumi’s father.

“Rumi, he’s here.” Kei muttered.

Minayama-san entered the room. “Rumi, you returned as you promised! I’ve been waiting for two years!” He exclaimed.

“Otousan.” She smiled and continued, “Tadaima!” She walked towards her father. “I’m very glad to see you again. You don’t have to worry about us, too. Okaasan’s doing fine.” She spoke up.

I got confused on what she’s saying. She looked at me and smiled. “Yuya, the time has come for me to leave already. It’s time to say goodbye again. I’m going home now”

“I can’t understand any single thing, Rumi.” I admitted.

She turned to Kei. “Kei, arigatou. I had completed my final mission. I could have my rest back home already.”

“Final mission?” I asked again but she just ignored me gain.

“Kazuki, Kazuya, arigatou. You’ve fulfilled your promise.” She stopped for a while then she began again, “ Have you brought the things I asked you to bring?”

“No problem about that! We have it.” Kazuki and Kazuya showed her two familiar boxes, another black box and a small jar. They gave it to her.

Rumi took the jar and turned to her father. “Otousan, take this. I know that you knew what’s inside.”

“Thank you, Rumi.” Minayama-san hugged her daughter tightly, tears falling from his eyes. A minute had passed, he pulled away and left.

“Rumi, I’m glad that I was able to help you.” Kei muttered. “It’s sad but Yuya has to accept the reality.”

“Reality?” I was completely ignored.

“Well then, he has to! It’s the truth.” I saw that sad smile again. She took those three boxes from her friends and gave it to me. “Yuya, thank you for being so kind to me, for being such a good person and the greatest man I had ever met. Here. Take this.” She fell silent. “Accept the fact that I’m leaving now. Inside those boxes are the best memories we have shared thirteen years ago.”

I took the boxes and looked at her sadly. I noticed that she’s disappearing.

“Sorry for being such a coward in this class. Every time I’m absent, I’m going inside that dull forest to make sure that my treasures are still there. Every year, I found no traces of Yuya. Until that time when I was about to leave, there’s still no Yuya by my side. All these two years I kept on looking for him. Luckily, I met Kei, his friend and he helped me to find him until this day.” She said looking at me. Rumi smiled, “And at last, I met him again. This is the happiest day for me. Now, I’m going to say goodbye to everyone.”

I can’t take everything she had said so without thinking, I hugged her tight. I thought she would not disappear completely if I will hug her tight but nothing had changed. The last thing on my mind is to kiss her so I tried. I was able to do so before she disappeared completely. My tears fell and I fall on my knees. I kept on calling her name. Rumi didn’t answer so I started to cry harder. I can’t stop myself.

Everyone was shocked. No one knows that they were dealing with a ghost. Well, Kei is an exemption since he knew who she really was.

Kazuki began to speak, “Rumi never wanted us to tell you this but you have to understand everything that is happening.”

“Rumi died two years ago. She got very weak when she reached 10. And it’s already a good thing that she last until she turned 16.” Kazuya explained.

“She knew when she will die. But before that time came, Rumi went back to that forest again. She made a promise that she’ll be back only to find Yuya.” Kazuki continued.

“She fulfilled everything already. That black box…” Kazuya pointed the box that I’m holding. “Keep that, the thing inside that box was made out of her ashes. So, take care of it.”

I continued to cry. I thought that time had stopped for me.

It took me three months to accept the fact that she’s gone. Rumi left when the time I was able to be with her came. I waited for so long. I just do hope that wherever she is now, she’s happy.

And I know that Rumi is watching over me.
