I definitely think that the alternate pose is more readable. Or maybe a third pose where the horse torso is more horizontal, and the human torso is turned to look at the stars, and maybe the right hand stretched out holding the bowl?
Have the butt on the left and head on the right you mean? Hm, I can see that, but it seems a bit like he's taking a passing glance at the stars rather than studying them to gain insight.
This is like turning into the debate on how Venus de Milo's arms used to be posed :P
