so a bunch of us are studying in the sessions annex, and at like 10:30, naomi looks up at me and asks, "dunkin donuts?" i nod and answer with another question: "dumpster?" she nods back, and says "fifteen minutes."
and so in fifteen minutes, we leave our friends and go down to main street to attempt to dumpster some donuts. the store closes at 11, so we hang out in the back for a while, trying to be nonchalant ("now, when they come out the back with the bag, don't act like we've been waiting here for them. we really don't want them to feel unsafe in their workplace" --naomi). after a while, nothing happened. we went around to the front, and watched them from across the street. at like 11:03, they turned off the lights and walked out of the store, without any donuts. we were obscenely impressed with how quick they closed up, and also obscenely confused about where they had put the donuts. we had seen them put them in a garbage bag from the window, so they had clearly thrown them out somehow...but where?! it's a mystery.
so, we feel a little sad and defeated. and a lot hungry. we decide that we're gonna walk down to king street, where the 24 hour dunkin donuts is, and just buy some, because what the hell. we figure it'll be nice to surprise our friends with a nice box of a dozen.
so we walk like, a mile and a half (or however long it is) on king street to the 24 hour store. when we get there, we decide to check their dumpster first, just in case (stina got many donuts out of that dumpster over the summer, before the new dunkin opened up on main street). this dumpster is a little more dramatic: naomi ends up climbing up the side while i hold her sweatshirt, and there's a guy nearby screaming on his cell phone...it's intense. anyway, we don't find anything. we decide again that we'll just bite the bullet and pay for them.
so we go in, and we're like, ok, it's only 5.49 for a dozen, that's totally fine. we ask for a dozen donuts and spend a ridiculous amount of time choosing which donuts should go in that dozen, but we feel satisfied with our decisions. the lady hands us the box. i decide i want a bagel, and i ask for that. naomi and i have a discussion in front of the cashier about how we're gonna pay for it (she only has a five, but we want to split it, etc) and figure out a plan. naomi goes to sit down at a table with the donuts, and after a minute, i sit with her. i get a text from lynnea, who's like, "are you still coming back?" and then a call from elena, wondering the same thing (because at this point it's like, almost midnight). finally, my bagel is done. i go up to get it and pay for the donuts and bagel--but the lady just hands it to me and says "here you go, thanks!"
i go back to the table with the donuts and motion to naomi that it's time to leave. nam is all like "did you pay already?" and i just nod and keep motioning that we should go. she's like "wait, did you? what? you didn't pay?" i'm like "nam! let's go." we go out the door and naomi turns back to the cashier: "have a nice night!" the cashier waves, "you too!" and we walk out the door with a dozen non-dumpstered, completely free donuts. incredible.
