There will not be a Spider-Man 4, instead Sony is rebooting the series without Tobey Maguire or Sam Raimi and sending Peter Parker back to high school. There was a lot of rumors lately that prep for SM4 wasn't going smoothly, particularly over the issue of who was going to be the villain. Raimi apparently wanted the Vulture, Sony... anyone else. Now, it looks like they've parted ways.
As cynical as this announcement is (rebooting a successful franchise less than ten years after it started?), I'm kind of intrigued. The third one was bad enough to tarnish my view of the whole series (the third X-Men film did much the same). Then again, I always thought Spider-Man 2 was massively overrated. I've seen it on a lot of "best of the decade" lists lately which I find puzzling. I thought it was slow and mopey. And Venom has to be one of the biggest missed opportunities opportunity of the series. It's pretty well known Venom was thrown into the third one with no enthusiasm on Raimi's part and therefore we had one of Spidey's most popular villains... teaming up with another villain in his big screen debut and then getting killed off ten minutes later. Sigh. Even if you think Venom's a limited character or too trendy, you can't convince me a killer two-hour flick couldn't be made with him (Cape Fear with superheroes, c'mon!).
There's no guarantee it'll be any good, but I'm looking forward to a fresh take.
