A visit to 197 Queen's Drive

Come with me on a visit to 197 Queen's Drive, Brian's childhood home in Liverpool. My only companion when I went was my camera, but I took enough pictures that you can imagine yourself coming along with me.

We will start at Liverpool Lime Street, the same station where Brian and the boys would have caught trains to London. We take a City Line train to Broadgreen Station, which is a small suburban commuter rail station. It's only two stops and takes under fifteen minutes to get there.

At Broadgreen Station... this message was brought to you by Climax Scaffolding.

Coming out of the station, we turn left and follow the road under the motorway.

Don't go to West Derby, Brian! Don't do it!

Crossing the road with care, we turn right onto Rocky Lane. A sign welcomes us to Childwall. Technically 197 Queen's Drive in is Wavertree, but I still find it rather exciting. The neighborhood is middle class, but nothing too exceptional.

Queen's Drive is a bit of a shock, a very busy dual carriageway. It wasn't like that in Brian's time. In this picture we're looking right from the junction with Rocky Lane. But we're going to head in the other direction, turning left onto Queen's Drive.

After walking for a while we come to Childwall Fiveways, a rather confusing roundabout. Queen's Drive is the road that continues straight across, the one signed to Woolton. But it's not immediately obvious. We have to cross two of the other roads coming off of the roundabout in order to keep following it. There are little shops dotted around the roundabout, though we can't see them from here.

eppylover take note! The sign on the roundabout is advertising the "Schmooze wine bar and eatery."

On the corner of Queen's Drive, a pub named after the roundabout.

Queen's Drive remains notably uninspiring.

On the other hand, the houses are definitely getting nicer and nicer as we walk along. We must be headed in the right direction!

And here we are! 197 is the white house in the distance.

Closer...

Side view.

The drive.

Front walk.

And the whole house. I was standing on the central reservation when I took this picture. I don't recommend that you do likewise.
