Not much new today...The weather has been a little on the cold side the last couple of days, with temps only in the low 60s. I finally got started with my homework for web programming. Nothing too complicated. Just had to learn a bit about the differences between XHTML and HTML. I have a lot of experience with HTML, but not with XHTML because I haven't really done any web design in about two years. It's not hard, but it takes some getting used to as far as the coding goes because it's more strict than plain HTML.
I could have done my homework using Frontpage or Dreamweaver, but those programs put out some bad looking code (though Dreamweaver is not as bad). My code for class has to be well documented and very clean. And it's good to get more practice anyway. There are a lot of CSS properties I haven't used in a while, so the more practice I get the more comfortable I will feel.
This afternoon I should be getting a trial version of Authorware from my professor so I can begin doing my work for the Hyperscripting class. I have to use an old version (4) so that I have the whole semester to work on my projects. The later versions only have time limited trials that won't get me through the whole semester. We will use 4 and then upgrade our projects to the latest version before our final presentations. I want to get all of my mini projects done before spring break so I can dedicate the second half of the semester to learning Flash. Our final presentation has to incorporate a Flash movie if you want to get an A. I have always wanted to learn Flash, and I attended a couple of workshops in the library last semester, but I just haven't had enough time since to learn anything more than the basics.
I got some really bad news on Sunday evening.
My uncle, who has a drinking problem, had run over somebody with his car. To make matters worse, he fled the scene, but the cops caught him as he was getting to his girlfriend's house. He was immediately arrested. So far, he has had his license suspended for a year and his car was impounded. He was released yesterday after a preliminary hearing, but the will have to go to court again to find out what punishment he will get. If he's lucky he will get community service, but most likely he will do some time. The judge at the hearing was kind of lenient because he's a first time offender, so he was even able to get a work permit so he can drive a truck at work. He works at the airport, delivering food to the airplanes..kind of scary..who knows if he's gotten hosed on the job in the past. Anyway, I was very angry when I found out what had happened. I love my uncle, he's family. But what he did was very stupid and cowardly. Bad enough that he ran over a 14 year old boy (he's going to be ok, thank god) but on top of that he tried to leave the scene. I do hope something good comes out of this and he goes straight, but I doubt it. Alcoholism is a serious problem in my family. My grandfather was an alcoholic and so are most of my uncles. That's the main reason why I don't drink much. I will have an occasional mixed drink, but that's like every couple of months. I already did all of my drinking for a lifetime in college. I remember getting wasted several times, almost to the point of needing to go to the emergency room, and it was not fun. I'm glad I got it out of my system.
I tried to watch the president's state of the union address last nite, but we had a freaking fire drill in the middle of it...who schedules a fire drill for a family building at 9pm on a weeknight...anyway, we had to wake up our daughter and venture into the cold..
When I came back in the speech was almost over...I think John Kerry was right on when he said what Bush was describing in his speech and reality are two different things. Not many of the people I know have experienced the recovery he kept referring to. And when he spoke about Iraq and Afghanistan I thought Ted Kennedy's head was going to burst. All he could come up on weapons of mass destruction was a K-report that dozens of these weapons had been recovered..Gee, I guess it was worth going to war then, to have dozens of weapons turn up..Not quite the arsenal he kept referring to before the war. And the so called democracy we've set up: a hand-picked council made up of people who were not even in the country to fight against Saddam during all those years...should they deserve to benefit now?..I don't think so..
I agree with the Democrat's response that what we need is to fund Homeland Security in a way that ensures our safety, not pass a law that curtails our privacy and civil right (the infamous Patriot Act). We need to fund security at our nuclear (which Bush can't even pronounce) power plants, near our energy research labs, and at our ports and borders, and give more money and training to early responders...
On the economy, I can't believe he actually said we're creating jobs...each month the economy has to create 250,000 jobs just to reach the levels before Bush came into office...last month it created only 1,000...I guess that's good in his book, when you come 249,000 short of your goal...But then again, I don't think Math is a strong point for him..
