I slept until noon today...winter break is great. After a quick breakfast, I proceeded to read some of the news, including some of thre reports about Saddam Hussein's capture this past weekend...Even though I was a political science major in college, I really don't keep up with what's going on in world affairs as much as I should...I have to much computer stuff to learn and just don't have any time left over for politics and the like. I do get Newsweek and US News and World Report so from time to time I'll take a peek at them (they're in the bathroom, so time is limited).
So, how do I feel about the capture..well, I think the administration will try to keep harping on it as much as possible (why not, there's this Halliburton mess that they need to keep our attention away from). But will it really have a big effect over there?...probably not, I am guessing. Let's see with 750,000 dollars and two AK 47s he was the mastermind behind the attacks on enemy troops...right...If anything, I think you will see an increase on attacks now from the most hard line elements....I really think the resistance there is more decentralized than the administration would like us to believe...And yes, still no weapons of mass destruction...not a one...Remember, that's what we went to war for..not to get rid of a tyrant (if that were the reason, we would have already invaded Cuba, which is only a few miles from FL and a very small island with nice weather)...My guess is that Saddam (from what I have heard) will be unrepentant to the end and will not really provide any information that will help us in finding any weapons of mass destruction....The only nice thing to come of this, is that our troops will get a morale boost...I am one of those people who opposed the war (I did not think it was a good idea to go in without international support or with fabricated world support..either way) but I fully support the troops there and hope they come home safe...
It makes me so mad when I think about all this...how the Bushwackers made a case for the ties between Al Qaeda and Saddam based on one meeting between an Iraqi diplomat and an Al Qaeda agent (a meeting which no one is sure took place}.....how they just kept repeating it until the American people began to make the connection with no supporting evidence...how we tried to make a link between Saddam and the acquisition of nuclear weapons based on falsified documents....come on, people, wake up...please...
The sad thing is there's no alternative...any of the Democrats will likely lose to Bush I'm afraid...Dean looks like the frontrunner, but as a Northeasterner I don't think he can get the broad national support to put him over the top...So it looks like four more years of this...so during that time our national debt will grow to like gazillions of dollars as the administration continues to phase in tax cuts without cuts in the size of government...nice legacy to leave to our kids, eh...
By the way, do you realize Saddam Hussein got better medical treatment after his capture than any of the 40 million Americans who don't have medical coverage...yours truly included...it pays to be a tyrant in today's world...I was reading an article the other day about how Idi Amin (who massacred thousands in Uganda) died of old age in Saudi Arabia, living it up in a mansion...how Baby Doc Duvalier, who ruled Haiti with an iron fist for like 30 years, also met the same fate in France...Pol Pot...same thing...and the list goes on...just not right...
