I have to stop thinking about this book for a while, so here my review of the OotP movie! (babysteps!)
I liked it fine. I guess the movies are really not independent pieces of art to speak of but rather very enjoyable as ... fanvids, or something. It's all about the fun of getting excited of how well they do certain scenes, characters and special effects. And damn, they did the new characters well!
Umridge! Bellatrix (Oh my beautiful Helena! You've been my first girl-crush for a reason!) Luna! Fanfuckingtasticness.
Generally the acting was better than ever. Lucius did not make me cringe. I'm so relieved, I always wanted to like him and finally he made me squee. Sirius didn't make me cringe either. In fact he had some nice scenes and behaved all super canonically. (I loved how his last words were "Good one, James!" btw.) Not even Dumbledore sucked! Wow!
I think Alan Rickman was also better. Actually he was quite awesome. (but damn his age is such a problem for the DH movie! Worse than expected! Old men can still be tragic, but they are different. Fun fact of the day (o_0): People with borderline disorder, for example, can be expected to get better automatically around 40, on the down side, feelings like being in love "get better", too! People really grow up and flatten out emotionally and their youthful spirit does vanish. Snape is so a young man! Pushing, thrusting, prepared to listen at keyholes and all.)
The "He's got padfoot" scene was in there! YAY! My favorite scene in OotP, I believe. (Snape was really enjoying himself there and it's not as if his life consisted of a lot of joy otherwise :(((((( - Shhhh Let's keep this about the movie!) The whole theater laughed at "If you don't want to poison Potter - and you have my greatest sympathy if you do...".
They really cut out Lily completely from Snape's Worst Memory - I almost feel bad laughing about that, because I think David Yates is such a cute guy, but LOL.
The kids were OK, in my opinion all of them, especially Luna and Neville. I ignored any possible Emma Watson acting annoyances in order to fully appreciate the cute. I loved the discussion of the Cho kiss and Harry's memory of it. Awwww. Perfect.
Nice fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort. I did not remember any of it from the book - I rather tend to ignore the action and concentrate on the dialogue when reading HP - but it was very believable that these two were first class super wizards, while most of the Order members or Death Eaters were quite good and our teenage heroes are just trying and could become great some day, but not yet. Appreciated that.
The movie should have been a bit longer and Harry and Cho should have had a disastrous date. The Occulumency lessons should have been a bit less spontaneous ("You probably didn't kill Arthur Weasley in your nightmare - Now concentrate!" Excuse me! T'was ridiculous.) A bit more Snape would have been OK. Otherwise good fun.
So how did the movie do on the box office? I know it did good but how well compared to the others, does anyone know? Statistics intrigue me.
