Remember that "war on women" that Republicans keep trying to convince us isn't happening? Utter slack-jawed morons like Missouri's Todd Akins pretty much ensure that we're going to think that, and considering his imbecilic comprehension of female biology--that is, assuming he's ever seen a woman naked, even--it locks it in for me.
Why?
Because of this cack-handed statement:
"First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare," Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Akin added: "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."
So let's break this down. This man is running for the Senate. This man is against abortion. So far, those two statements--even together--aren't deal-breakers. But.
"Legitimate rape"? What the hell kind of backhanded slur is that, exactly? As in, only some rapes are legitimate? Who decides that? What are the criteria? And if he says that he "just knows" I want to hire someone to slap him with a fish. Preferably before cameras.
The next problem: if a woman's suffered one of these mysterious "legitimate rapes"...then her body just...turns off the pregnancy? Isn't that also abortion, you nitwit? Doctors didn't invent the word to describe one specific doctor-assisted event--the word exists because it can happen spontaneously, it can happen surgically, it can happen hormonally...but the sheer gall of that level of self-assured twaddle coming out of his mouth--that for "legitimate rapes" the woman will just handily take care of things, because if a woman gets pregnant, well, that's because she had FUN BEING RAPED.
He pisses me off SO damn much.
Oh, and when the backlash started--and there was backlash--he decided to retract these idiot statements like the spineless worm that he is:
"In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year."
Read "deep empathy" in this instance as "he couldn't give a rat's ass about unless they're rich and want to buy his vote", I think.
Honestly, if Missouri actually ends up electing this idiot, then they're absolutely getting the government they deserve, but seriously...when Mitt Romney distances himself from this man's campaign, he should be reading loud and clear that he Done Screwed Up, Y'all.
And I seriously think he's too stupid to realize the depth of his insincere, vacuous twaddle on his climb into a Senate seat beyond "oh, fudge, I done upset the wimmenfolk."
