I've been trying to stay out of the controversy (raging now on all sides), but
a post from Manning's legal team made my jaw drop. Okay, one, sure, you shouldn't smart off to people with no senses of humor, but they were putting him through hell before he said anything. And depriving him of clothes--and not just while in solitary, but when he's brought out in front of other prisoners and his superior officers--just seems vindictive and needlessly cruel. Not the least of which that they could provide him with supposedly "suicide-safe" clothes--after all, they specially ordered a bed which is bolted to the floor, where the pillow and the mattress are one piece so the pillow cannot be removed...but now nudity? Each day, every day?
Aren't we better as a culture than this? Apparently not.
And while we're here, the
one hundred greatest movie insults of all time.
