more songs in the key of yaaargh

So off I'm ambling, on the off-again on-again song search, when I find the equivalent of a total song dump on some World of Warcraft forum, of all places. This is the result of that long list--the ones that I've managed to find, anyway...

Ace Frehley, during the heyday of Frehley's Comet, recorded a song called Something Moved. It's a peppy little piece about a haunting:

Your eyes are dead and broken
Fixed in a stare without a blink
You see but don't believe it
Like a wino swearing off a drink

It's not high art. But it's a fun song.

AC/DC recorded Hells Bells, as well as Highway to Hell, Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be, and If You Want Blood (You've Got It). (Anyone out there want to flip me "Hells Bells", I'd love it.) (All links YouTube.)

Adrian Alexis is a singer, or a band, trapped in Spokane (my sympathies); in the meantime, all I'm able to track down of his is I Feel Fine on YouTube.

AFI covered the Misfits' Halloween. The Alan Parsons Project did two whole albums on Poe. (That's five links, there, all from Tales of Mystery and Imagination.)

And we're not out of the A's yet.

Thing is, all of this--from where we are all the way down to ZZ Top--these aren't disturbing in the least. Not like Years Ago by Alice Cooper:

All my toys are broken
And so am I, inside, Mom
The carnival has closed
Years ago...

or Spinal Meningitis by Ween:

Why they wanna see my spine mommy?
Why they wanna see my spine?
It's gonna hurt again mommy
Much worse than last time

or Tori Amos' cover of Eminem's Bonnie and Clyde 97, which I think is even more disturbing than the original:

There goes mama, spwashin in the wa-ta
No more fightin wit dad, no more restraining order
No more step-da-da, no more new brother
Blow her kisses bye-bye, tell mama you love her

So what makes a seasonal disturbing song, then? Because I think a child frantically trying to figure out why things hurt so terribly every time Mommy says they're going to the doctor's is disturbing any time of year. The story of a dad who stabs his ex-wife to death and then asks his young daughter to help dispose of her corpse would be disturbing as hell in July, let alone October. And Alice Cooper's "Steven" cycle (which spans several songs at this point, and includes "Steven", "Years Ago", "Cold Ethyl", "Some Folks", "Welcome to My Nightmare", "The Awakening", "The Ballad of Dwight Fry", "Wind-Up Toy"...in fact, most of the songs off of the Welcome to My Nightmare album, and all the songs from The Last Temptation album), rate among the most disturbing group of songs ever recorded.

Though, admittedly, many of my favorite Alice Cooper songs? Are part of the Steven cycle.

Alice Cooper in general, tends towards the disturbing, on more than slight occasion.

"This House is Haunted":

You float through the living room, I watch my TV
I feel you sit down on the couch right here next to me
Then I feel your lips touch mine, just like we used to do
I`m so happy all alone...being here with you...

"Pick Up the Bones":

There are stains on the floor
Where the kitchen once stood
There are ribs on the fire place
Mixed with the wood

"I Love the Dead":

While friends and lovers mourn your silly grave
I have other uses for you, darling
We love the dead

"Millie & Billie":

And I liked your late husband Donald
But such torture his memory brings
All sliced up and sealed tight in baggies
Guess love makes you do funny things

"Roses on White Lace":

Blood drops look like roses on white lace
Crimson and sweet, stained on the sheet
Roses on white lace, pretty in red, dripping and wet
Roses on white lace, spilled on the walls, dark in the hall

and so many others...but he's so very good at what he does, disturbing or not.

More later, when I wake up properly. Pleasant dreams.
