"I'm not going to get into politics here -- I'm just going to do my work and then report what I see and hear throughout the day. If you guys want to play Democrat vs Republican vs Independent, go right ahead, but I'm really weary of the permanent election season this country's turned into. Honestly, these are politicians you guys are getting so excited about. Politicians. As far as I'm concerned, I don't trust people who want to tell other people how to spend their money and what they can read or see on television and what they can do in the privacy of their own homes." I should remember. It's a better way to look at things.
Cat went out today and got me orange-pineapple guava juice, and pudding, since I've reached the stage where not only breathing, but swallowing, is a careful, considered process. I've had chest-impacting illnesses so often, I know how to handle it, but I'm wondering about people who reach the "I can't breathe easily" stage in this and panic. I'm wondering if that's when folks end up in the hospital, or dead, from viral stuph--because they feel like they can't breathe, and don't take the time to realize that breathing will still happen, if you just calm down and pace yourselves.
Of course, here's the downside to calm--being calm, I'm not deeply inhaling, because I don't want to start coughing my lungs out. So I'm a tad dizzy, due to loss of oxygen.
Btw? I'm not keen on being this body-aware. Anyway.
More photos.
You're not looking at a reflection of trees overhead here. You're looking at TWO PALM TREES IN THE DAMN POOL.
Image from Miguel Gordillo.
Apparently, a lot of the trees were uprooted in Kendale Lakes, falling into homes and across routes of escape roads and highways.

New Orleans left to the dead and the dying.
This pic is from Yahoo Photos.
This, for me, is a really powerful image. I don't remember the name, but I remember seeing that cemetary--and that street, for that matter--in films like Double Jeopardy, among others. And now we're seeing it under water and folks begging for help on an upper balcony.

Katrina criticisms echo past complaints against Bush .
The next pics are from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
These are all pics from the first day Katrina hit town. This particular shot is from Gulfport, Mississippi.

This is another shot from Gulfport. This is a boat spinning on Highway 90 in Mississippi. Where, y'know, boats really shouldn't be.

Everyone went to the Superdome or the Convention Center to hang out, but on Monday, winds and driving rain were shredding the hell out of the surface of the dome.

The Hyatt Regency downtown had to evacuate on Monday after Katrina blew through. Why? All their windows blew out. With none left, water, wind and debris came right in. All their guests had to bunk out in an interior conference room.

Oh, and doesn't THIS suck...Main of this photo is palm trees bent nearly to the ground with the driving winds from Katrina. But in the background, that plankboard house with the sheeting? They were still rebuilding from Hurricane Ivan. Jesus.

This is such a small and stupid detail, but when Cat went out and got me juice, she also got me an eight-pack of triple-A batteries. For my .mp3 player, which eats them like nummy candy. And I don't know why--it's such a stupid little thing--but I nearly drenched her shoulder, because of it. Now I'm sitting here listening to Limp Bizkit's rendition of "Behind Blue Eyes" and feeling just that smidgeon bit better with the world.
Don't ask me why. I don't know.
Other small news--the
Air America Emergency Voicemail worked today. And no, they tell me he hasn't recorded a message--at least for the number last known.
[UPDATE:
This site showed an entry for him yesterday. He's alive. He's in Colorado with with his mother. He made it.
[Damnable shit bastard. But he made it.]
