I was reading fanfic the other day (imagine that) and I had the thought - If I were writing this fanfic, I'd do XXX and XXX differently. So, what if I did, you know, do that? Take the premise from a fanfic and rewrite it the way I think it ought to have been written?

Can't do it. That would be plagiarism...right? But isn't that what motivates us to write fanfic in the first place? We have an idea of what we would've liked to have happened in a book/movie/manga/etc (usually some romantic pairing) and so we transfer that idea to the written or typed page. As a fanfic. Or, we like the characters so much, we want to carry on their adventures in the same or an alternate universe. Then we give credit to the original creator. "I don't own Inuyasha."

So what if I rewrote one of those badly written fanfics into a similar and only moderately badly written fanfic - should I simply write, "I don't own XXX's fanfic," to avoid accusations of plagiarism by stealing her/his premise or OCs?
