I started my observations a few weeks ago at a local high school.
I'm observing a fraternity brother, Mike. He's amazing. He graduated from UCM with his Master's in English Literature last May, so this is his first year teaching high school (he taught composition 1 while getting his master's)...
He does such a great job with me! He told me that when he did his observations, the teacher never talked to him and he literally just observed the whole time. I'm already been working with the students -- he even let me teach a lesson! I was so freaked out, but it went FANTASTIC! I taught Langston Hughes poetry to 11th graders.
The students REALLY responded well to me... and I felt completely natural and comfortable while teaching. It's the greatest feeling in the world! It really started off my weekend the right way! AND I get to teach part of The Great Gatsby starting next week!
Yesterday, I even stayed an hour after school with the teacher I observe and some of the students for their "chess club" meeting, haha. It was pretty cool though; I learned how to play chess (from one of the students I taught! How cool!)
I am just... SO satisfied with my entire life right now. I'm loving it!
I already have 16 hours of observation done, and I only need 30 total... but I think I'm going to go until school gets out in May. I just LOVE it that much!!! I will have 70-75 hours by the time I'm done. I figure that I might as well go -- it's fun, it's GREAT experience, and he's letting me teach... so it'll be cool!
