Ah, where to start. All sorts of things have been brewing in my life lately. I'm taking draping and textile science classes at FIT two evenings a week, while still working overtime hours and trying to get to the gym as much as I can so I haven't been home much. I've also been negotiating a contract to work at the Santa Fe Opera again this summer ( Read more... )

I dont get the gates. I think Keith Olbermann put it best when he said:
'like somebody was trying to build something and ran out of money. I expected then that the vast billowing orange bed-sheets still to be hung, would make Central Park look like it was filled with the rotting shells of giant lobsters.'

They seem interesting, but incredibly pointless

you know in every group of friends you end up with that one kid that just ends up hanging out with everybody. He's kind of a fuck up and he always makes an ass of himself in front of the ladies... but you just keep him around. Nobody is sure why or how he started hanging out but everyone is compelled to take care of him. That's ollie.

he's a dumbshit but only we can call him a dumbshit

PS. you're saying art serves no purpose

except that some people derived something from it.

so i'd say it's good art.

Hi, Ollie. I have indeed heard about you but it's nice to actually meet you.

Sort of.

Online. But not in the creepy way.

I think.

Anyway, i was pretty skeptical about the gates as well but when you actually see them it's pretty amazing what they do to the park, especially if you've been there lots of times before. They make you see the whole park in a new way. It's interesting and hard to describe.

The artists themselves have actually said that it has no meaning. They spent 20 years trying to get permission to do it and fighting with the city bureaucracy, so it seems like it's a statement, at the very least, on the state of public art in our society.
