The President's Arcadia

Oct 29, 2009 03:20

I've been doing a bit better. Thankfully, I have wonderful friends who are always willing to help. It's wonderful feeling, realizing you're not alone with your troubles.

On a surreal note, as some of you might know, President Barack Obama flew into SRQ (Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport) to visit a solar power plant in Arcadia.    http://www.bradenton.com/847/story/1800540.html

What was surreal was seeing Air Force One parked at the airport (next door to New College) on my way to the bank in Bradenton. Let me tell you, Air Force One is a huge plane, and SRQ is tiny and mostly serviced by small and mid-sized planes. I've never seen a plane that big at SRQ before. In fact the only place I've seen planes that big was late at night in Tampa when they were being fueled for the early-morning flights. I mean, I'm sure there were Boeing 747s at JFK and Logan (in Boston), but I never actually saw them. And I, of course, have only been on tiny planes.

So anyway yeah, surreal. Also- the president visiting Arcadia? Odd. Arcadia is a backwater that grows tomatoes and electricity (as well as having solar power, it also has a power plant that has a manatee preserve built around it, so the manatees have a safe place to go during the winter. . . .  and to give birth, judging by the number of baby manatees I saw when I visited there).

But apparently Arcadia also has one of the largest solar power sources in the world. Acres and acres of solar panels. I think that's neat. I can imagine why the president visited to show support for renewable energy.
