1. She is a blogger and a bit of a cartoonist, and she has a somewhat successful blog called “Sides of a Penny: The Blog of an Airforce Girlfriend, Wife, Widow, and Friend.” The popular cartoon strip that accompanies it sometimes she titled “My Captain, Oh Captain,” a spoof of the poem, and the starring characters were based off Declan and Elliot, respectively Captain My and Captain Oh.
2. Her sense of humor can at times be humorous, dry, sarcastic, morbid, and sometimes offensive, but she doesn’t really apologize for it. She’s honest in what she says about her life, and if it offends people, that isn’t her fault.
3. Declan died two weeks after being home for leave, and after his funeral she became certain she was pregnant. Unfortunately, it was simply stress affecting her body, and when she found out she wasn’t pregnant and never had been, she ended up very depressed for awhile, and moved in with her parents.
4. Nellie doesn’t believe in love at first sight, but she had a connection with Declan from the first time she met him, and she knew she loved him after a couple of weeks.
5. She and Declan (and Elliot) were all geeks of a sort, and one year when they were all together they did Dragon*Con in costume. Nellie made Elliot dress as Mal, calling him Captain Tightpants the entire weekend just to make him squirm, while she dressed as Kaylee and Declan was Wash. She was told many times it looked rather odd for Wash to be attached at the lips to the ship’s engineer…
6. Her marriage was neither smooth nor easy. She was a civilian, and sometimes the life was very hard on her. Her blog was a way of dealing with that, in part. She and Declan worked hard to make it work, though. He cheated on her, once, when he got drunk and lonely while deployed. He owned up and they went through a rough patch but they managed to get through it, and she trusted him enough that it would never happen again. If anything, ultimately their marriage was stronger.
7. Her family never quite fully approved of Declan, and never really approved of Elliot. This was in part to some misconceptions she didn’t address, but it’s been a frustration to her for years.
8. She finally finished up her undergrad in history this year, and she started her masters mostly so she could stay in her very competitive reenactment job in colonial Williamsburg.
9. She is in some ways a stereotypical redhead, as she has quite a bit of temper when provoked. This usually simply involves a lot of yelling and hand waving, and usually goes away about as quickly as it comes.
10. She wanted kids very badly with Declan, and they were trying when he passed away. Now that her sister and sister-in-law are both pregnant, she’s keen on not being at home. She’s happy for them, but it makes her very sad, to see what she wanted so much.
11. She likes scented candles and scented things that burn far too much for her own good.
12. She’s a drab hand at cooking-not professional, but she does enjoy it. It’s one thing her sister has always been dreadfully jealous of her about, especially when she decorates cakes and cookies.
13. She’s not conventionally pretty, but something about her often gets her a second look.
