I don't really know why, but I've been watching a lot of WWII movies lately.
Flammen & Citronen / Flame & Citron (2008)
Director: Ole Christian Madsen
Cast: Thure Lindhardt, Mads Mikkelsen, Stine Stengade, Peter Mygind, Mille Lehfeldt, Christian Berkel
I watched this movie mainly for Thure Lindhardt who I had previously seen in
Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken (one of my favourite movies ever). I didn't really know what to expect, but the trailer looked pretty interesting so I checked it out. It's an incredibly well made film (apparently one of the most expensive Danish productions ever made), with great actors and a gripping story. What I liked most about it was that it keeps surprising you until the end, and you're never really sure who can be trusted. Definitely worth checking out!
Die Fälscher / The Counterfeiters (2007)
Director: Stefan Ruzowitzky
Cast: Karl Markovics, August Diehl, Devid Striesow, Martin Brambach, August Zirner, Veit Stübner
I watched this one for two reasons:
1) August Diehl (who played Thure's gay lover in
Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken... Did I mention I was obsessed with this film? *g*)
2) It's the first Austrian film to ever win an Oscar. \o/
Again, great performances from all the actors, and a very interesting, morally complex story.
NaPolA / Before the Fall (2004)
Director: Dennis Gansel
Cast: Max Riemelt, Tom Schilling, Jonas Jägermeyr, Leon A. Kersten, Thomas Drechsel, Martin Goeres
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I expected this movie to be mildly entertaining at best, but boy, I ended up loving it A LOT. It's basically about the friendship between two boys at an elite academy for Nazis. There's tons of slashy subtext (which is always a plus), but seeing as this is a film about Nazis, there are also a few scenes that are quite hard to watch (for various reasons). Overall, though, it's a very beautiful and moving film, and I urge everyone to watch it. ♥
I'm also looking forward to seeing
Inglourious Basterds, mostly because August Diehl and Daniel Brühl are in it. (Can you guess what's coming now? Yes, both of them were also in
Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken! Hmm, I'm sensing a theme here... XD)
Btw, this post wasn't intended as a subliminal message to make you watch WndLiG, even if it did seem that way. But since we're on the subject, here's one reason why you should see that film:
I'm not even shipping those two, but I do like that scene. ;)
