for the past two and a half weeks, my comparative religions class has been studying religion in tv... so far we've looked at two shows... "the simpsons" and "lost"... I must say that i feel bad for the people in the class that dislike/don't watch those two shows since the lectures for the past 2 and a half weeks have been solely on these shows... it's kinda entertaining for me cause i get to see how stupid christians/catholics interpret the simpsons... These people are idiots... they compare lisa simpson (a practicing Buddhist) to be "christ like"... does that not make anyone else crack up??? or am i just weird...
ANYWAYS... to the point of my entry (other than procrastinating for my bio exam) is how different people interpret things to fit their ideas/beliefs... some people watch the simpsons, which is at some times a "religious satire", and think that the show teaches kids how to be good little christians/catholics... but i grew up watching that show and i am no-where near a perfect christian/catholic, in fact i extremely dislike them... my mother did not let me watch this show because of the bad things that took place in the episodes... but other christian/catholic parents religiously watch the show with their kids and have a good laugh... Growing up watching this show, i never thought to myself "maybe i should go to church", or that because i don't worship the same god as everyone else, that i'm going to hell, or all of those bullshit questions religion causes you to think...
I know that the simpsons isn't an atheist show, but i must say that it depicts church to be boring and pointless since the main characters fall asleep during the sermons, or that homer and the kids dread going to church and hate their evangelical (branch of christianity) neighbors... i don't look at all of this being a positive thing for christians/catholics, but yet the most popular christian magazine recognizes the simpsons as the most religious family on tv... of course the producers won't say that they don't intend these stories to be sacreligious (since they want all of the publicity they can get)... but who knows what the writers/creators of the show want to portray the simpsons... maybe because both atheists, agnostics, and religious people can all interpret that show in their own way, and they can pick and choose what beliefs/values they want to take from it...
so i didn't mean for this to turn into a rant about the simpsons... but that's the way it ended up...
wow... i really hope that whole rant makes sense to whomever stumbles upon it... all i know is that i really love learning about all of the different religions and how they effect society...
