Perhaps liberatarians are naturally attuned to structures which permit freeloading but not to those that deal with externalities.

A justice-based view rather than an effectiveness-based one. (Which may explain the appeal libertarians have to the right wing.)

Conversely, many liberals are naturally attuned to unfairness/inequality, whose shortcomings you've touched on in your post.

Politics is rarely about policy.

I was thinking about this exact thing recently (libertarians killing their credibility by being anti environmentalist). very true.

and nature DOES have inherent value. and reasonable environmentalists (ie those who agree with me =P) aren't at all opposed to technological progress, they are just wary of the immense costs of unforeseen consequences on the only earth we have, and so are in favor of extreme caution in such cases. it's like riding a motorcycle. if you screw up once, game over.
