I just finished reading "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. It's the autobiographical story of Jeannette's childhood growing up. You might not believe it's real when you read the things that happen, but it's true.
Walls is a phenominal writer, letting your see into her eyes and thoughts as she goes from being a trusting little girl to a celebrity gossip columnist. Seriously, if people tried to do this stuff to their kids today they'd be stuck in jail. She never condemns her parents for their selfishness in raising her (her mom who was too busy painting to cook, dad drank the food and rent money, etc.) but she tells her history with humor and love for her family. Go read it. Period.

Glenn, this one's for you, Mr. I-don't-read-fiction.
An interesting note: Lori Walls did a bunch of fantasy novel covers.
