SO last night at work a boy told me that he called that an order was ready early because he was doing "hood-rat" stuff.
I was offended. Not that he would say something so childish and then quote some rap song about a girl who "sucks d*cks" and all, but because I've seen how TRUE poverty is in the U.S. Yeah we have it better off than pretty much any other country save Western European places and Japan, but DadGUM.
Being a "hood-rat" for this kid is impossible. He is in SCHOOL. He has access to a CAR which he can drive to work. Oh, yeah, he has a JOB, too. I wanted to ask how many grades he's failed.
There was a family in our school last year with TWELVE children. Seven of them were attending the school. Pre-K? What's that? Most had already failed one grade. Our school was a charter school so we did not have access to county transportation. These kids often WALKED for 3 miles (including the First Grader) with no adult supervision so they could get to school because there was no car. Mom did not have a job, but she was not present in the kids' lives. I won't get into the father situation because it's too confusing for words. The kids had free breakfast and lunch because of the national program, but we had no clue what they were given to eat at home. Of course social workers were involved with the family, but the caseload is so heavy in that area that not much was done. Our company raised $1500 per school to give to three needy families at Christmas-time. They were hands-down the most needy family in our school and they received this gift two years in a row. One of the Second Grade teachers had a student from this family. One day he was in trouble and she said she loved him and he shouted "NOBODY LOVES ME!" This is just one example of the things I've seen, but another thing that's probable for these kids is dropping out. Our school had Eighth Graders who were turning 16. I wonder how many of these kids will get to high school.
So yeah. Having seen what the "hood" can offer, you're not from there, kid. I didn't say all of these things because I was at work and because I didn't see the point. The manager heard the exchange and didn't call him out for the cursing and inappropriate topic for the workplace when he quoted the rapper, so there was no backup. He wouldn't have listened anyway. It kept me up last night and woke me up this morning. Yeah, all our lives have stressful situations and pitfalls. I wouldn't say he doesn't feel pain. Just that he is ignorant to the real hurt that he's glamorizing.
