“Hey Minnie!”

“Yes mommy?” little six-year-old Sungmin looked up at his mother. They were at the mall shopping for a gift for his father’s birthday.

“Do you need something Minnie? Are you hungry?” his mother asked looking an expensive pen set.

“No I thought you called me.” Sungmin answered now looking for the source of the voice, “but I am hungry.”

“Ok let’s go get you some food,” she replied not noticing the nervous look on her son’s face and sat the pens down.

That’s when it started. Or when he thought it started.

**

“Minnie come play with me!”

Sungmin ran down stairs giggling and ran towards the door. He began to put his shoes on with a smile on his face.

“Min where are you going?” His dad asked looking up from his news paper.

“I’m gonna play outside!” Sungmin answered turning the door knob and running into the front yard; his dad watching him through the front window.

He watched his son, of seven, play by himself in their yard with a ball. He watched the look of his son’s face go from a large grin to a pout within six minutes. He watched his son skip around the yard, and crawl. He watched his son stop crawling and catch a grass hopper. He watched his son grab one of the grass hopper’s legs and start to pull at it. He watched as the grass hopper’s leg was ripped off by his son.

His eyes widened and he went to the door to call his son into the house.

“Why did you do that to the grass hopper Min?” He had asked him once Sungmin walked into the house and began taking off his shoes.

Sungmin shrugged, “I don’t know.”

**

“Minnie I don’t like that person.”

Eight-year-old Sungmin heard as he was eating his lunch at his new school, “So? What am I supposed to do about it?”

“Take his snack. He doesn’t need it. He is getting fat anyway.”

“Ok!” Sungmin smiled as he got up and took the pudding snack from another boy’s hands and threw it across the room at the wall. The boy began to cry.

“Lee Sungmin!” The teacher yelled when she saw the mess and a crying Donghee. The teacher walked over to the crying boy and tried to sooth him. When she calmed him down she turned to Sungmin, “why did you do that!”

Sungmin shrugged, “I don’t know.”

“You will bring him a snack tomorrow and I’m calling your parents. Go stand in the corner,” the teacher scolded.

**

“Minnie can I sleep with you?”

“Ok! But you get that side!” Sungmin smiled snuggling into bed. His mom walked in and sad on a chair by his bed and read him a bed time story.

She hugged and kissed him good night and tucked him into bed. She turned away but Sungmin spoke up, “Mommy aren’t you going to say good night to my friend?”

“Who?”

“My friend! Remember mama! You said he could stay the night! And he’s right here! How could you-”

“Ok ok calm down Minnie! I’m sorry.” She turned to the empty space beside Sungmin, “Good night.” She said patting the pillow and Sungmin smiled.

“Night mommy!” Sungmin said as she turned the lights off.

About midnight Sungmin’s parents were awoken to their nine-year-old son’s screams. Mr. Lee ran into Sungmin’s room and tried to turn on the light but the bulb flickered and went out. He ran to his son’s bed and picked up his struggling son and carried him out into the hall where his wife was waiting nervously.

They both looked worriedly at their son and saw deep scratches along his face and blood under his finger nails. He was thrashing; trying to scratch anything he could reach on his body and even on his father.

“Minnie, Minnie, honey please wake up.” His mother said shaking him gently trying to avoid his hands.

He stopped moving and opened his eyes slowly. He looked around in a daze, “Mommy?” He asked when he saw his mother, “Why does my face hurt?”

**

“This person doesn’t want to help! They just want your parents’ money!”

“You’re right” nine-year-old Sungmin mumbled sitting in a waiting room.

“Min, did you say something? I’m sure the wait won’t be much longer.” His dad said patting his son’s leg.

“I don’t wanna wait any more! They just want your money so let’s just go home!” Sungmin said getting up and heading toward the door.

“Lee Sungmin?” a nurse said.

“No! I’m going home!” He yelled and ran for the door but his dad grabbed him and carried him into the doctor’s office; with Sungmin kicking and screaming profanities.

“Sungmin, do you know why you are here?” The polite doctor asked.

“So you can take all of my parents’ money!” Sungmin yelled.

“No you’re here so I can help you.” The doctor said.

“Lies”

“You’re lying!” Sungmin yelled running up to the doctor, kicking him hard between the legs and running out of the office entirely.

His dad quickly apologized and said he would pay for anything and ran after his son. He saw his son sitting outside on the curb, “Sungmin, why did you do that?”

Sungmin shrugged, “I don’t know.”

**

“Let’s go watch the sun set!”

“Okay! It’ll be fun! But where?” Eleven-year-old Sungmin said sitting in his room after school.

“The roof duh silly!”

“But dad said I’m not allowed on the roof because I could hurt myself…” Sungmin said hesitantly.

“Please you won’t get hurt! I’m sure of it!”

Sungmin sat on his pink bed thinking it over, “All right let’s go!”

He ran out of his room, down the stairs and into the backyard. He looked around to see if his father was around. He didn’t see him and he ran up to the storage shed. He pulled the door handle but he couldn’t get it open.

“It’s locked!” Sungmin said pouting, “I need the latter but it’s in there! Dang It!”

He kicked the door of the storage shed and turned to walk back inside.

“I don’t know why you’re throwing a fit Minnie. The door is unlocked!”

Sungmin turned around and saw that the door was indeed open. He smiled and ran into the shed to get the ladder. He put the ladder up against the house and began his ascent. He was smiling all the while and sat down on the roof.

“See, I told you it’s not that bad! Go ahead and stand up!”

“Ok!” Sungmin stood up. He watched the sun fall below the horizon. He thought it was so pretty and from on the roof he could even see it better!

“Lee Sungmin! What are you doing up there? Get down right now young man before your mother comes home!” He heard his dad yell at him.

He looked down and saw how high he actually was, “I-I can’t!” He hesitated again.

“Yes you can! Just jump!”

The next thing Sungmin felt was himself falling off of the roof. He saw his dad gasp and run to the general area Sungmin was falling to. He felt his father barely catch him, but he also felt and heard a sickening crack. He screamed in pain as his father picked him up, being careful not to move his leg, and walk him to the car.

“Sungmin why did you do that?!”

Sungmin groaned, “I don’t know!”

**

“Minnie I’m bored of school!”

“I know! Me to but recess is soon then we can play!” The twelve-year-old said taking notes trying to follow the teacher’s instructions.

Soon after the teacher sat at her desk, she announced break time. Sungmin was bouncing in his seat and before she even finished speaking he ran out of the room and onto the playground, dragging one of his friends.

“Hyuk!Iwannaplayontheswings!Orhowabouttheslide!ButnothereareotherpeopleandIdon’twannasharetheslidewithanyoneexceptyouandmyotherfriend!Howaboutthemonkeybars!”

“Sungmin!” Hyukjae yelled at the strange boy dragging him, “I can’t understand you! Slow down!”

“whatdoyoumean! Can’tunderstandme?!I’mtalkingnormallikeIalwaysskjgvradcosvfvgr” Sungmin said stopping at the swings, “Ohlookswings!YouswingI’llpush!” He finished pushing Hyukjae onto the seat and pushing him.

“Go higher!”

Sungmin pushed Hyukjae higher and higher, even when Hyukjae was screaming for him to stop.

“Just push him higher!”

“Okay!” Sungmin said pushing Hyukjae even higher.

Hyukjae got even higher and was getting really scared so he jumped off of the swing. When Hyukjae landed he landed on one foot and ankle. He screamed in pain.

“Oh Hyuk are you ok!?” Sungmin said running up to his friend.

“”No stay away from me! I told you to stop!” Hyukjae said crying and holding his ankle.

Two of the other student’s saw what happened and one went to the teacher the other to Hyukjae. He helped Hyukjae up, glared at Sungmin and they walked to the nurse’s office.

When the teacher reached where Sungmin was now swinging she gave him detention and asked why he pushed Hyukjae so high when he was afraid of heights.

Sungmin shrugged, “I don’t know”

**

“I wanna talk to aliens!”

Sungmin was sitting in his room looking at all of the cool things he had gotten for his thirteenth birthday, “I don’t think we can talk to aliens.”

“Yes we can. See there’s one now!”

“Oh hi!” Sungmin said to the extraterrestrial that was suddenly in his room seemingly from out of nowhere.

“Hello, earthling,” was all it said.

“My name’s Sungmin! What’s yours?” he asked but all he got in return was some grumbles, “Oh that’s cool I guess but I can’t talk to aliens! I can’t understand you!”

Suddenly the alien was standing in front of him with its tentacle-like fingers around his neck.

He felt the fingers tighten and he began to suck in air to scream and yell for someone, anyone. He was losing consciousness when his parents ran into the room and saw their son with his hands around his neck, screaming.

“Sungmin what are you doing?!” He heard his mother yell.

“I-I don’t know,” and he passed out.

**

“If you’re so sad then why don’t you just end it?”

“But I don’t wanna leave you!” The now fourteen-year-old said, looking into the mirror.

“You won’t leave me, silly! I’ll always be with you!”

“Really, you will?” Sungmin said eyes lighting up and turning to face the opposite wall.

“Yes, really, Minnie, I love you!”

Sungmin’s eyes began to tear up, “I love you too!”

He turned back to the mirror, opened the medicine cabinet, took all of the pills out, swallowed all of them, and grabbed the knife off of the cabinet. He took a deep breath-already feeling dizzy and light headed-and cut open his wrists before stabbing himself in the stomach. He fell to the floor in a heap of limbs.

He felt the blood flow from his body and the darkness began to take over him when he felt, more than heard, the door open. He heard his mother’s gasp and his father’s voice; calling someone.

“Sungmin, my baby what have you done to yourself!” His mother said, crying.

Sungmin shook his head.

**

“You’re back!”

“Yeah but I have to be good so I don’t go away any more.” Sungmin said walking into his room after a year in a hospital. Sungmin was used to the neatness. This dusty room of his was driving him crazy.

“Then clean it.”

And that’s what he did, for four days. He would only take his meals at a certain time of day and yelled at his mother if she didn’t make it on time. His things where neatly placed in the room in even numbers and all of his clothes were neatly hung up or folded and organized by color. If there was anything out of place in his room he would yell and scream profanities while cleaning it up. He wouldn’t allow anyone except his friend into the room. His parents didn’t even go in there anymore. They were worried but didn’t say anything because they didn’t want to upset their only son.

**

“Let’s see how long you can hold your breath!”

“Okay!” The sixteen-year-old said to his friend. They were at a public pool his parents forced him to go to. He thought it was really dirty but once he got into the water and into the deep end he didn’t think it was too bad.

He took a deep breath and completely submerged himself in the pool water. He swam to the bottom of the pool for about a minute and a half when he decided to swim back up because he couldn’t hold himself under for much longer.

But just before he reached the surface he felt a hand on his head holding him under. He began to struggle and all of the air in his lungs was forced out as water rushed down his trachea and into his lungs. He struggled harder with each inhale of water into his lungs but he was quickly losing consciousness.

He felt arms wrap around his torso and pull him to the wall. Some more hands took him out of the water and placed him on the floor. He felt hands push on his chest forcing the water up and out of his nose and mouth. It burned.

“Hey kid what were you thinking?”

Sungmin looked at the life guard, “I don’t know”

**

A year later Sungmin was walking home from school late one night when he felt someone watching him, “Is there someone following us?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Ok, but let’s hurry.” Sungmin said speeding up.

“Whatever.”

Sungmin heard footsteps. Instead of turning around he decided to start running. He didn’t get the chance to go very far because he felt large hands grab his shoulders and force him into a dirty alley and up against a dirty wall. He began to scream and yell for help but all he heard was a man laughing at him.

He felt a fist connect with his face and he stopped struggling. He felt his shirt rip. He felt his bare back hit the wall again. He felt the man’s erection against his hip. He felt the man pull his pants and underwear down. He felt dry, thick, fingers enter him. He felt the pain of being stretched by two fingers.

He screamed. He cried. He begged. He pleaded. He just wanted it to stop.

He didn’t see the man’s face. He didn’t see the stars when he looked up. He didn’t see his friend. All he saw was black as the man took his fingers out and inserted the larger organ into Sungmin’s body. Splitting him in half.

Soon it was over and he was left on the dirty ground of the alley. He was alone. Alone, for the very first time since he was six.
