regarding the new sandra bullock/ryan reynolds romantic comedy, "the proposal":
it looks like what happens when you take a harlequin presents novel and turn it into a screenplay, though i guess you could argue the same for a lot of romantic comedies (give or take a few greek billionaires and secret sheiks' secret babies' SECRET EATINGS, but i digress). watching previews for it, i spotted several favorite tropes--boss marries secretary for a convoluted/ridiculous reason, uptight workaholic woman vs laidback guy (granted, most male protagonists tend to avoid actual DOORMAT status, but i digress again), "SMALLTOWN VASTLY SUPERIOR TO BIG CITY RAWR HAVE A CUPCAKE", etc, to say nothing of the usual "woman doesn't have a sex drive/love life till she meets her OTP" which you see, like, EVERYWHERE.
first time i saw the preview i was all "hey cool, this looks like fun, i enjoy looking at both those actors and the premise is...oh wait a minute...goddamnit, hollywood. again?" i mean seriously anyone who's seen a romantic comedy EVER has seen this story a thousand times.
but maybe it's just me. is it just me?
