Chapter 7 Chapter 8:
After being informed of the incident, Pi wasted no time in asking his friend, “Ryo-chan, do you like Ueda?” The other turned and stared at him for awhile, clearly asking the question as to whether he was insane or not. He frowned, “Do you?”
An offhanded shrug, “I don’t hate him, if that’s what you mean.”
This caused his frown to deepen, “But do you like him?”
The shorter boy blinked, “Why? Does it matter whether I like him or not?”
He tried not to sound too accusing and mortified by giving a shrug, “I don’t know, I just heard from a source of mine who heard from a source of his who heard from a source of his who heard it from I’m not sure where that you and Ueda don’t hate each other.”
Ryo’s brows furled, “Yea, I don’t hate him, didn’t I just say that? Why’d you have to hear from your source’s source’s source’s source anyways? You could’ve just asked.”
Pi felt a little stupid at that, but it had to be done. He hated feeling jealous, but he hated the idea of Ryo liking someone else even more, and the idea of Ryo not telling him even more than that. He answered honestly, “I don’t know, I never really thought of it I guess. But still, if you don’t hate him, does that mean you like him?”
The shorter boy looked confused, “Huh? We’re not friends.”
“I know that, but is there anything else?” He realized just how blunt he had to be to get the message across to the other. It was like talking to a rock. “Is there anything…more?”
It took awhile for the words to set in, then the shorter boy’s eyes widened, “what!? You think I like-like him!? Fish-lips!? What’d you do? Merge with Jin!? Where are you getting your information from!? That’s just-ew, fish-lips!? Just because I don’t hate him doesn’t me I like him in any way! Who are your sources!? I’m going to beat them up!”
His shoulders slumped, “Thank god…”
The elder glared at him, “what’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing Ryo-chan. What were you saying about beating people up?”
A frustrated yell, “don’t remind me of that! I can’t believe you believed them…”
So, as Ryo went off on a tangent, ranting about ridiculous the whole notion was, he could only exhale in relief, mentally willing his heart to stop beating so hard.
Stupid Jin.
-------------------------
After school, he was jogging to catch up to the other, “Hey Kame, wait up!”
The younger boy stopped walking and turned around, “Yea?”
“You want to go to the Tanabata festival with me, Ryo-chan and Pi?”
A blink, “Hm? Sure, it sounds fun.”
Jin grinned, “Good, then it’s settled. And bring your dog, we’re all bringing ours.”
Kame’s smile widened, “Okay.”
“Alright,” he pumped his fist in the air as he walked away, “everything’s going to work out perfectly, just watch!”
He completely forgot to inform the younger boy of his plans.
-------------------------
And so, when the festival came, the three of them were waiting at the entrance for the youngest boy. Pi smiled, not feeling impatient since he arrived half an hour later than he was supposed to and had no right to complain, “Ryo-chan looks surprisingly cute in a yukata, and so does Jin.”
Jin huffed and looked down at his clothing, “What do you mean I look cute? Akanishi Jin always looks manly no matter what he’s wearing, not cute.”
Ryo let out a dry laugh and crossed his arms, “right, manly Jin, what an oxymoron.”
The youngest was about to reply when someone covered his eyes, he groped at the hands.
There were three.
He freaked out.
“Who the hell is covering my eyes!? Actually, who the hell has three hands!? Ryo-chan, Jin, who is it!?” Then he heard laughing and stumbled backwards ungracefully to see Tackey and Tsubasa, holding hands. “Tackey!? Tsubasa-senpai!?”
The elder was laughing too hard to reply.
His best friend grinned, “You should’ve heard yourself, I’ve never seen you so freaked out before.”
“Shut up Jin!”
Tackey was clutching his stomach as he tried to stop his laughing, still holding Tsubasa’s hand, “you should’ve seen yourself, Yamapi. It was priceless! I wish I had a camera with me!”
Pi shot his friends a pout, “you all suck…”
Their seniors just grinned and began walking, ruffling his hair as they did, Tackey gave him a discreet thumbs-up, “good luck with your rock.”
And Tsubasa just smiled ruefully and patted his back.
-------------------------
When Kame finally arrived, their dogs were sitting around, the smaller ones climbing all over Ryo’s larger dog who just laid there apathetically, occasionally wagging his tail. Jin huffed, “took you long enough.”
Kame dipped his head ruefully, “Sorry, I was helping Tat-chan with his yukata and then Taguchi came over then Koki then Maru and my mom made us eat dinner before coming because she thought we were going to starve or something.”
Pi laughed, “Kame-chan looks cute in a yukata too.”
The younger boy smiled, unsure of how to reply such a comment, “thanks, you too?”
Ryo kneeled by his dog, trying to get the smaller dogs off of him, but every time he relocated one, it’d run and jump back on. While he was doing this, the younger two were exchanging grins.
Jin watched the scene before him and tried his best to suppress his frown.
-------------------------
As they made their way through the crowd, occasionally stopping to eat or to play games, the four were chatting animatedly. They were talking about fireworks as they made their way towards their next destination with the eldest running ahead excitedly with his dogs, yelling about something they couldn’t make out.
Then Jin ‘tripped’ and toppled over ungracefully.
The three rushed to his side, half amused, half worried. It was easy for him to tell who was talking based on the comments made. The more concerned were Pi and Kame, the…not so concerned was probably Ryo.
“Jin, are you okay?”
“Why are you so stupid?”
“Did you break anything?”
“I can’t believe you did that.”
“What happened, Jin?”
“Maybe if you lost some weight, you wouldn’t have fallen so hard.”
“Where does it hurt?”
He frowned and looked at his dogs, “I think I tripped over one of their leashes.”
Ryo sighed and shook his head, not an ounce of pity in his voice, “That’s what you get for having so many dogs.”
Jin let out a loud whine, “Ryo-chan, it hurts! Take me somewhere to sit down!”
The younger boy blinked, “why me?”
Then Kame stepped in, “Jin, do want me to go with you? I mean, I can go…”
He shook his head stubbornly and drilled holes into his best friend’s head, “No. I want Ryo-chan to come with me.”
The two both raised a brow and asked in unison, “Why?”
“Because Ryo-chan’s the perfect height to be a human crutch.” Then he leaned over, grabbed Kame by the sleeve and whispered into his ear, “What are you doing? I promised you didn’t I? A date with Pi. This is it, so if you don’t take the chance, that’s too bad for you ‘cause I’m not going to plan another one.”
Pi looked down at him with a frown, “Jin, are you going to be okay? Should we take you home? Maybe you should see a doctor…”
“No, don’t worry about it, Pi. I’ll be fine, I just need to sit for awhile,” he pulled Ryo and leaned against him, “come on skinny monkey, we’re going that way!”
Ryo winced as he held the other up, “…you’re really heavy, Jin…” but he walked off supporting him anyways.
-------------------------
Once they were out of sight, Jin perked up began looking around with excited eyes. And he jumped a bit when he saw the food stalls, “Hey Ryo-chan, look at that! Takoyaki! Can we get some? Please?”
Ryo frowned, not really taking notice of the sudden loss of weight against him, “Jin, we can get that anytime we want, we’re supposed to get you somewhere to sit…”
He jumped again, “But Ryo-chan, I want some now!”
The shorter boy paused, blinked, turned and stared at him, “what? I could’ve sworn-weren’t you hurt?”
Completely ignoring his friend, he continued pointing at the stall with an impatient pout, “I want takoyaki! Come on Ryo-chan!”
Ryo’s eyes narrowed as he crossed his arms, “We’ll get some later. But first, you have to tell me just what the hell is going on. I thought you were hurt so I gave up my time to help you find a place to sit and here you are jumping around like a…a stupid kangaroo!”
Jin sighed and crouched down, dogs in tow. He completely missed the other’s angry rant, “fine, if I explain this to you, will you get me takoyaki?”
The other shrugged, “Yea, sure, just tell me already.”
“Okay here, I’ll even draw pictures for you,” he found a twig nearby and began drawing his picture story in the gravel while Ryo stood by his side and watched, “Once upon a time, there were four boys by the names of Jin, Ryo-chan, Pi and Kamenashi.”
“Don’t refer to yourself in third person, Jin, it’s weird.”
“One rainy day, school was out when Kamenashi and Jin met. They met because they were fighting over an umbrella which didn’t belong to either of them. In fact, it belonged to an angry looking girl who snatched it away from the two, so neither of them got it.”
“Is this story actually going to go anywhere?”
“But fortunately, in the end, they ended up sharing Ryo-chan’s umbrella, which was later misplaced by Jin, since Pi decided to drag Ryo-chan out for ramen without Jin.”
“You’re the one that stole my umbrella!? You lost it!?”
“Shhh! So, while Jin was walking Kamenashi home, Kamenashi suddenly sees a puppy on the side of the road and fights for it with Jin. In the end, Jin was victorious and got to keep the dog. They ended up going to Kamenashi’s house where he insulted Jin several times after Jin figured out that in English, Kamenashi could spell yakuza. After that, Jin met Kamenashi’s older brother who looked exactly like him.”
“I really don’t need the background story of this…”
“And when the two finally calmed down, they began arguing over the puppy’s name. In the end, its name was Ten because it was October 10th that day and in English, the word for that’s ten.”
“…you know what? I’m going to go get you your takoyaki now, maybe when I come back you’ll be at the main part…”
“But then in order to keep the puppy, Jin had to fulfill three promises. One of which was to get Kamenashi a date with Pi because Kamenashi liked Pi a lot. But there was a problem, several actually, since Pi liked Ryo-chan and Ryo-chan was too dense to realize it. Jin and Pi had taken to calling Ryo-chan a rock since he was dense and oblivious like one. Anyways, because Ryo-chan was a rock, Pi went to Tackey for his advice and went through a lot of phases, all of which failed.
“So now, Kamenashi’s chasing Pi and Pi’s chasing Ryo-chan and Ryo-chan’s chasing flies because there were tons of flies around Ryo-chan’s house when Jin went there. And here Jin is chasing after Kamenashi because he actually likes Kamenashi and doesn’t want him to end up with Pi…”
He stopped drawing and stared at his picture story incredulously, “no way…did I just say-I couldn’t have-what the hell!? I like Kamenashi!? Oh my god, Ryo-chan, did you hear that!? I just had an epiphany!” He got up and looked around when he didn’t receive and answer, “Ryo-chan? Where’d you go? Did I just get ditched?”
After scanning the area and being unable to find his friend, kicking the gravel, he frowned and crossed his arms with a pout, “this sucks. What’s the point in having an epiphany if no one’s around to hear it?”
-------------------------
When Ryo returned with the requested takoyaki in his hand for his ‘crippled’ friend, he frowned, “Hey, where’d that retarded tree stump go!?”
-------------------------
A/N: Yes, so Jin realized that he likes Kame here! I'm tired so that's all I'm going to say. And I got a summer job! XD Anyways, enjoy!
