Chapter 6 Chapter 7:
Tackey ran a hand through his head in disbelief, “I can’t believe this, Nishikido might actually be denser than Tsubasa…” he got up and began pacing about, “maybe it’s snowing in hell right now…”
Pi sighed and sat there, “I’ve gone through forty phrases already…they all just seem to fly over Ryo-chan’s head or something.”
“That can’t be right!” The elder let out a frustrated yell and left the room, “I need to think on this.”
So he sat there, left on his own in the senior’s dorm, suddenly there was a voice from the door, “that means he’s going to go take a really long shower.”
For a moment, Yamapi wondered if he was supposed to bow in the presence of Tsubasa, king of the oblivious people. But he settled for a nod instead, “Oh…hey Tsubasa-senpai…”
The taller boy looked over, “Yes?”
“How did you…” he struggled for the right words, “with Tackey…how did you realize you…uhhh…liked him?”
Tsubasa blinked, “What?”
“How did you come to realize that you like-liked Tackey?”
“Hm…? I’m not sure…it just kind of happened…”
Pi furled his brows, “Okay, how did you come to realize that he liked you?”
The elder left out a laugh and rubbed the back of his neck, “I’m not sure actually…we were always friends, and I always thought he was an idiot…I mean, he did all these really stupid things, but they were cute…most of the time.”
-------------------------
Tsubasa was walking out of the class when he heard a “hey Tsubasa!” and looked over. He saw Tackey jogging, and tripping ungracefully over a garbage can as he made his way towards him.
The younger boy propped himself off the ground with a sheepish grin.
And all he could do was smile.
-------------------------
“We’re going to be late for the movies!”
He blinked, “we can just catch the next one…”
Tackey stared at him, “no way, I promised you that we were going to watch the five thirty one! So come on, if we run we’ll probably make it!”
Before he could reply, the other had grabbed his hand and was dragging him down the street.
-------------------------
“Tsubasa, I like you a lot,” Tackey said with a smile.
He smiled and replied immediately, “I like you a lot too! You’re the best-est friend I’ve ever had!”
As he left, he heard loud, repeated thuds.
It sounded like something being hit against a locker.
And for some reason, Tackey’s forehead was bruised when he came to school the next day.
-------------------------
Tsubasa was sitting around when the younger boy came up to him, “I’ve got a date tomorrow!”
He smiled, happy for his friend, “I hope you have fun!”
The next day, he overheard Tackey mumbling to himself, “Damn, that didn’t work out at all…”
He stepped into the room with an encouraging pat on the back, “don’t worry, it’ll be better next time.”
Tackey sighed, “No it won’t…” then he walked off, muttering to no one in particular, “…void of oblivion…”
-------------------------
“Tsubasa look, I made lunch!”
“Really? You made this all by yourself? This must’ve taken you hours!” He opened the lunchbox, “Whoa, there’s even a heart! How cute!”
Tackey laughed, “Isn’t it?”
He grinned, “Are you practicing for your future girlfriend?”
The other let out a weak chuckle, eye twitching just slightly, “Yea…of course it is…”
-------------------------
His phone rang; he picked it up, “Hello?”
“Tsubasa, come over, I want to see you…”
He blinked and put down his book, “Huh? We just saw each other the other day though.”
“But I want to see you now!”
“Is something wrong?”
“No, I just want to see you.”
Tsubasa frowned, “Okay…”
An irritated sigh, “would it convince you to come over now if I told you that my room’s a mess and there are mismatched socks all over the floor? Oh, and my books aren’t in alphabetical order either-god, look at this mess.”
He got up and headed for his shoes, “I’ll be right over.”
-------------------------
Pi stared at the other, he didn’t know whether he wanted to laugh or sympathize with his senpai. Tackey really wasn’t exaggerating after all, and from what he knew, Tackey was anything but discreet.
Tsubasa looked at him curiously, “yea, in the end, something happened and we ended up together.”
He raised a brow, “Huh? Something?”
The elder shrugged, “I’m really not sure what, though. Why’d you ask?”
He felt like bowing to the other’s obliviousness. “Oh…well the thing is,” a moment of hesitation, “I like this person and they have no idea that I like them. So I was wondering what I should do to get them to notice my feelings for them.”
The taller boy looked up in thought for a moment, “…have you tried kissing?”
-------------------------
“Jin, you look deep in thought.” When he received no reply from his friend, a frown made its way onto his face, “Fat Jin?”
“Hn…?”
Ryo blinked, “For a second I thought I’d have to send you a map so you could get yourself out of that empty space that is your head. So what were you thinking about?”
The elder shrugged absentmindedly, “I was just thinking about running before you kill me. You know, because I killed a spider yesterday with your shoe and I put it back in your locker…”
The shorter boy stared at him, “Are you serious!?”
Jin nodded with a dazed smile, “yep, so I was just thinking ‘maybe I should run before Ryo-chan gets mad…’ It was pretty gross…and Kamenashi was all ‘Ew! That’s disgusting! Why are they still friends with you!?’ and I was just like ‘Hahahaha! Because they love me! Because I’m un-hate-able, I mean, I’m Akanishi Jin!’ and he was all-”
He was smacked on the side of the head, “Jin, I’m going to kill you!”
The impact snapped him out of his trance; he turned and stared at his friend, “Crap! Ryo-chan! Did I say all of that out loud!? I meant…I was thinking about…rocks! And how they’re really dense and they’ll sink within seconds…actually, you’re kind of like a rock, did you know that?”
Ryo shot him a funny look, “I’d feel bad for beating you up…it’d be like attacking a retarded pig…with no limbs…or nose…actually, you’d be more like a retarded tree…stump. You’re like a retarded tree stump.”
Jin smiled, “And you know what they say about retarded tree stumps, they love getting ramen with dense rocks that can’t swim.”
After a moment of consideration, the younger boy shrugged, “sounds fine with me.”
-------------------------
Later that night, he received an excited call from his best friend.
“Jin! Jin! Jin! I’ve got the perfect plan!”
He blinked as he stared at the ceiling, “What is it, Pi? Are you going to shove him down a well and save him?”
“…what? No, that’s not really what I had in mind. You know how Tanabata’s coming up soon, right?”
“Yea…and we’re going to see fireworks like we do every year, right?”
“Right!”
Suddenly, a brilliant idea flashed through his head, “Wait a sec, Pi, I have to do something really quickly, I’ll call you right back.”
“Oh, okay, hurry up though.”
“Yea, I will,” he hung up and called Kame, “Hello? This is Akanishi Jin, is Kamenashi there? Which one? Huh? Oh, Kazuya, I’m looking for Kazuya, sorry.”
A tired voice came on, “Hello? Jin?”
“Hey!”
“I’m actually a little glad you called, guess what I found out?”
Jin blinked, “What?”
“Tat-chan and Nishikido-senpai don’t actually hate each other.”
He stared at his phone, “What!? What do you mean they don’t hate each other!? Of course they hate each other! They hate each other so much, they want each other dead! They’ve hated each other since…years ago!”
“Yea well from what I heard, Okada-sensei made them confront each other a couple years back…”
-------------------------
“Now how did this happen…?”
The two stared somewhat fearfully at the teacher in front of them, hair dripping with juice and tomato sauce. Immediately, they pointed at one another, “It was his fault! He did it!”
Within seconds, they resumed fighting.
The teacher’s eyes narrowed, “am I going to have to take you two to the principal’s office?”
The pair immediately stopped and shook their heads, “No!”
He raised a brow, “You two think alike, hm?”
“That’s an insult! I’d rather give myself a concussion than think like him!” They continued glaring at each other.
The adult frowned, “alright, clearly there are issues going on between the two of you. Not only can you read each other’s minds, you’ve gotten my suit all dirty, you’ve ruined my hair and you’re not getting along. Something has to be done.”
The boys watched him suspiciously, “like what…?”
Okada stared at them, “What? Why are you asking me!? Deal with it yourself! I’m not getting paid to deal with your personal problems!”
“…aren’t you?”
The teacher huffed, “No I’m not, or at least I’m not getting paid enough to care…especially if I have to put up with you two,” he muttered to himself. “Fine, here’s what we’re going to do. You two will go home today and write apology letters, honest ones, we’ll meet back here tomorrow at the same time-hopefully without the food-and read them out loud, okay? Does that sound like a plan? Because if it doesn’t, you two can always take it out in the principal’s office.”
The two shook their heads and answered quickly, “Sounds like a plan!”
-------------------------
So the next day, they met up again, with their deepest, most inner thoughts about each other written out on paper. Okada crossed his arms, muttering something in English under his breath, “alright you two, let’s get reading, you,” he pointed to Ueda, “You go first.”
The elder frowned, “Why me?”
“Because I said so, now read.”
Ueda gave an unhappy huff but unfolded his letter nonetheless, “Fine…
“To Nishikido:
I am sorry, to the extent where I won’t get sent to the principal’s office. There are a lot of things that I actually don’t like about you, but there are good points about you too…two, maybe three points…like…you have black hair. You have straight teeth…and…
Oh wait, never mind, I only wrote down two.
Yea so, I don’t actually hate you, and I guess the festival that time really got us into our competitive mood and yea…if you ask me, I actually think it’s Takizawa-senpai’s fault, I’m pretty sure he’s the one that tripped me.
And…and…I can’t read this last part since my dog drooled over it. So I guess that’s it.
From Ueda Tatsuya.”
Ryo looked unimpressed, and the teacher had a brow raised, “Well…see how thoughtful and honest that was? I don’t see why you guys aren’t friends. Let’s hear yours now.”
The younger boy frowned and cleared his throat,
“To Ueda:
I don’t hate you, but you still look like a fish.
From Nishikido Ryo. Heart.”
The adult nodded approvingly, “that sounded heartfelt to me, so I guess you guys are pals now, right? I’m going to go grab my lunch, and if I catch you two throwing food around again, it’s the principal’s office, got it?”
“Got it!”
Once the man left, the two stared awkwardly at each other. Ryo frowned, “So what now?”
The other shrugged, “I don’t know, there’s nothing to do anymore…”
Ryo glanced over, “Hey Ueda…”
The elder looked over, “Yea?”
“Do you still love nature?”
Ueda raised a brow in confusion, “Huh? What?”
“Do you still love nature after what it’s done to you?”
He glared at the shorter boy, “if nature was mean to me, it must’ve sadistic to you.”
A pause.
“…you’re still ugly.”
“And you’re still short.”
“But I don’t hate you.”
“Me neither.”
The younger boy smirked, “But that doesn’t make you any easier to look at.”
Ueda scoffed, “Like you should be talking, I wonder how many times you’ve been stepped on by taller people-and by that, I meant everybody.”
“You know what? I’m leaving; I’m allergic to ugly people.”
“Does that mean you’re allergic to the mirror?”
“Haha, I’m leaving before I throw up all over you, fish-lips.”
“Dwarf.”
“Ugly.”
-------------------------
His eyes widened, “You mean they’re fighting for fun?”
“Apparently they're frienemies.”
“Wow…and suddenly, everything I once knew as balanced and secure has just crumbled down into some big pile of jenga bricks.”
Jin could hear laughing on the other line, “Yea, so what were you going to tell me?”
“Oh yea! Guess what!? I’ve got it all planned out, that thing you wanted to do where you hung out with Pi alone.”
“You mean a date?”
He nodded enthusiastically, “Yea, that’s the word! See…this is what’s going to happen is…hello?” When he received no reply, he looked at his phone only to realize his batteries had been drained.
Brows knitting, he made his way to the home phone. Unfortunately, his mother was busy chatting away with an aunt of his and he was pretty sure they weren’t going to finish any time soon. He sighed, “oh well, I’ll tell him the next time I see him. I’ll just call Pi back when they’re done.”
-------------------------
By the time he called Pi back, the other was asleep already.
