Prologue

Chapter 1:

Frowning from his table, he looked at the segregated groups spread around the cafeteria. Ironically, the groups consisted of ex-best-friends. In one corner was Nishikido Ryo with his group of friends surrounded by his admirers. In the next corner was Yamashita Tomohisa in a similar situation. And finally, there was Kamenashi Kazuya in the same scenario.

The number of neutral students such as himself were quickly diminishing. One by one, they drifted off towards the corner of their preference, whether it was their own choice or pressure from friends, he’d never know. Maybe they were charmed by Pi’s cool demeanor, or Ryo’s snarky retorts, or Kame’s boyish grin, whatever the reason, he soon found himself alone on neutral ground.

He looked down at his lunch and sighed, today, he was sitting with Kame. Tomorrow, he’ll sit with Ryo, then Yamapi on the day after that. It was a cycle he couldn’t get used to, he missed sitting with the three of them together. But instead, it’d turned into some sort of war between them.

And he was right in between the three of them.

Something had happened when he went away to America one summer, because when he got back. There was nothing but angry silence between them. And when he asked, all he received was,

“They’re stupid!”

“They’re too immature!”

“They started it!”

Even now, he only had a vague idea of what happened. Luckily for him, they respected the fact that he couldn’t possibly choose between his best friends and continued to welcome him with warm smiles and outstretched arms.

He’d been trying for years now, getting the three to make up. It never worked. The only time they behaved orderly around each other was on his birthday.

It was their unwritten agreement.

-------------------------

Kame smiled as he took his seat beside him, “hey, how’ve you been?”

He returned the smile and took a bite of his lunch, “fine, you?”

The younger boy gave a shrug, “same old, same old. Taguchi finally got a haircut.”

Jin raised a brow, “Did he really?” he looked over at the mentioned boy and blinked, “wow…he looks like a completely different person.”

The other laughed, “Doesn’t he?”

Under the table, their hands blindly groped around for one another.

-------------------------

After their fight, Kame had found friends in five others; they formed a group and remained that way. Arranging the letters of their names together, they made the name KAT-TUN for themselves. He had asked about the A before and was replied with a warm “it’s for Akanishi. You’re welcomed here any time, you know.”

He and Kame were ‘close’ in the sense that went beyond just friendship. But due to the current situation, it wasn’t able to bloom into anything like what they wanted. Instead, they were constricted to secrecy and silence. They resorted to holding hands under the table, hanging out outside of school, things that wouldn’t give them away.

It wasn’t what he wanted at all. And he knew for a fact, it wasn’t what the other had in mind either.

No one wanted to be kept a secret.

No one deserved to be.

Kame blinked and looked over at him when his grip on the younger boy’s hand tightened.

-------------------------

Ever since the three stopped talking to each other, he’d been desperately looking for signs of hope. Hope of being able to have three best friends by his side once more, and thanks to this attitude, he constantly caught Kame’s glances at the other corners, not with scorn, but with melancholy, and the younger boy’s slip of tongue every now and then. Whether it was out of habit or actual longing, he couldn’t tell, and he didn’t want to ask.

It wasn’t much, but it managed to keep him going.

With every day that passed, he was slowly formulating a plan inside his mind on how to get them back together. Having learnt from past mistakes, he realized just how careful he’d have to be.

-------------------------

During the first year of their fight, he tripped on purpose that day and sat in the middle of the cafeteria, giving a loud shout to his friends to go to his aid.

It was all part of his brilliant plan.

Faithfully, the three came running to him and paused when they faced each other. Pi was the first to look away from the other two and down at him, “what happened, Jin?”

He sniffled loudly for attention and dramatic effect. He hoped that if he looked pitiful enough, they would ban together to help him or at least cheer him up. “I tripped and now my lunch is gone and my knees hurt…”

Ryo extended his hand out with a sigh, “you’re so clumsy. Here, I’ll take you to the nurse’s room and get you lunch, okay?”

Then Kame reached out, “I’ll share my lunch with you, okay?”

Pi didn’t say anything, but then before he realized it, the three were glaring hotly at each other. A moment later, the dam broke, “why don’t you just take over everything again, hm?”

“Like you should be talking! You selfish jerk!”

“At least I’m not a bossy little brat!”

Forgotten, Jin stared at the three, “…guys…?”

The three turned on him angrily with a “Just go to the nurse’s office yourself!” and stormed off into different directions.

In the end, he had Tackey drag him off to the nurse’s, and he didn’t get to eat until he got home.

-------------------------

He loved spending time with Kame after school. When it was with the group, they’d go out and eat and go shopping or do something musical, it was fun, but in a different way. When he was with Kame and Kame alone, they’d usually spend it in parks or at each other’s houses, sometimes talking, sometimes playing, and sometimes just sitting in the comfortable silence.

The elder’s lips curled up into a content smile as he laced glanced down from the television screen to their laced fingers. “Kame…”

The other looked over, “Hm?”

He placed a kiss on the other’s cheek and breathed, “My one and only Kame…”

Kame giggled and snuggled closer to him, “you seem really out of it today.”

“Do I?”

The younger boy replied with a nod, “Were you thinking about that again?”

Jin sighed, “a bit…”

“Oh? If it’s not about that, then what were you thinking about?”

“About us,” he answered honestly, “about how it shouldn’t be kept a secret…”

Kame gave a kind smile; it was one that was reserved especially for him, “Bakanishi…”

It was the nickname Pi had given him when they were younger, he silently noted.

“You think too much,” the younger boy rested his head on his shoulder, “this is fine, isn’t it? At least for now…I’m okay with this. I mean, it can’t be helped, right? You don’t want to create a misunderstanding between you and Ry-…Nishikido and Yamashita, right? I understand, it’s fine. We’ll manage to work something out.”

Sighing, he buried his nose into the other’s hair, breathing in the scent of shampoo and conditioner, “Kame…”

“We’ll be fine…so stop thinking about it, and stop thinking about the past…there’s no point, it’s done and over with so…just stop thinking, Jin.”

The question he had on the tip of his tongue never managed to make it out.

Do you miss it?
