Chapter 20:

The days continued passing, he found himself laughing and smiling just a bit more. He ended up going to the beach with his friends, though he didn’t surf or swim with them, instead, he sat on the sand with a content look on his face as the wind blew past him.

I’m trying, Kame…

Is this good enough for now?

-------------------------

Jin…

-------------------------
Before he left for America, he found himself staring at the park with the creaky swings once more. He sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets.

Maybe when I come back…

I’ll be brave enough to fly again.

Maybe then, I’ll be brave enough to face you…

And somewhere in the back of his mind, he heard a gentle voice,

-------------------------

That’s just like you…

-------------------------
After spending six long months in America, he returned. At the airport, he greeted his friends with a smile, as large as he could muster. His hair was untrimmed and his skin didn’t have the amazing glow it would’ve had he spent more money on skincare products rather than movies and food.

“Ryo-chan! Pi!”

The first thing he was greeted with was with a “You look terrible!”

“It’s nice to see you too, Ryo-chan.”

Ryo grinned, “It’s nice to have you back, Fat Jin.”

He tucked his bangs behind ear and laughed, “I didn’t gain that much weight!”

The shorter singer raised a brow though he couldn’t find it in himself to stop grinning, “Tell that to the door you won’t be able to get through, or the couch you’re going to break when you sit on it.”

Unfazed, he grinned at the other, “I missed you too.”

Pi looked at the two with an excited smile, “should we hug?”

Ryo shook his head, “I’ve told you before Pi, we’re too manly for hugs.”

“Then this can be a manly hug!”

“There's no such thi-”

The youngest singer pulled them into a hug anyways.

-------------------------

Have you finally forgiven yourself, Jin?

-------------------------
After a press conference, a much needed haircut, and a nice long dinner and movie with his friends, he found himself standing in front of his own door once more. Taking a deep breath, he stepped in.

The place was exactly as how he’d left it.

A mess.

Paper scattered everywhere, socks lying about, and blankets on the floor. Sighing, he went around and tidied it up a bit before plopping onto the couch. He looked at the pieces of paper in his hand, he gave a soft, rueful smile.

Sorry Kame…

He was able to smile, but he wasn’t ready to write another song.

Not yet.

As he continued flipping through the pieces of paper, he blinked at one that wasn’t written in his handwriting. He pulled it out from the pile and began reading it.

I’ll Be With You…

Suddenly, his phone rang. Feeling around for it, he finally found it and picked it up.

It was his manager.

“Yes?”

“You’re appearing as a guest on another program tomorrow so be ready by ten, alright? I talked to them and they want you to sing ‘Utaitsuzukeru Toki’, okay?”

-------------------------

There’s no point in looking back when there’s so much to look forward to. But…

-------------------------
About a week later, after he got his work back into order, he walked down to the street, looking at the new advertisements that had replaced his. “TaNaka hm…?”

He made his way into a familiar shop.

The place where it all started…

The bell jingled, welcoming him back from his long absence.

The owner of the store looked up with a smile, “Welcome,” then he took a good look at his customer, his smile widened, “it’s been awhile.”

“Yea…it’s been quite awhile…” he took his usual seat and was brought his usual drink. “Thanks.”

Taguchi looked around, seeing that there weren’t any customers in dire need of attention, stood beside the singer and began conversing, “I heard about the press conference, it was all over actually. That was quite the hairstyle you had there.”

Jin laughed, “it couldn’t have been worst than your blonde hair.”

The owner laughed, “I got this message telling me to cut my hair.”

He looked up, “From Kame?”

“Yea, how’d you know?”

A grin, “I’m magical that way. No, I’m lying, he left me one too.”

The taller man sighed and turned his gaze out the window, “I guess he’s still looking out for us hm?”

The singer gave him a melancholic look and nodded, “Yea…”

Changing the subject, the owner’s smile returned, “So how’ve you been?”

He shrugged, “I guess I’ve been alright, you?”

“This place is still up and running, I’m getting roles every now and then, so I guess I’m alright too.”

“That’s good to hear,” he took a drink of his coffee and let out an appreciative “ah…damn I missed this place.”

The owner looked pleased, “that’s good to hear.”

The singer nodded, “Hey Taguchi.”

“Yes?”

“I’m planning on visiting him later…”

There was a brief moment of silence between the two before the taller man smiled, “it’d make him happy, knowing you visited…”

Jin nodded again thoughtfully, “yea…it would, wouldn’t it?”

-------------------------

Is it okay if I continue being selfish, just for a little longer?

-------------------------
So he stood there, a bit away from the grave, a rose and a card in his hand. He could hear a soft voice coming from a figure crouching in front of his destination. “Hey Kame…I have to go now…I’ll be back next time.”

The figure got up and paused, Jin blinked, “Ueda?”

The other looked equally surprised, “Akanishi? So you’re visiting Kame too, hm?”

He nodded and rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand, “Yea, I’ve made him wait a little too long, he’s probably mad at me…”

Ueda gave a soft smile, “yea, he probably is, but then again, he’s probably happy anyways. Well I have to go to boxing practice,” he began walking towards the gate, “I’ll see you later. And don’t do anything retarded or I’ll kill you and drink all your blood.”

Jin laughed, “I’ll try not to.”

-------------------------

Because I don’t want to be forgotten, not yet.

-------------------------
After the other left the premises, he crouched down in front of the grave in a similar manner, “Hey Kame…sorry for making you wait…I went to America for half a year, did you know that? I think my English is finally up to Ueda’s standards. You know…I find myself thinking a lot, stupid things of course, things like, what did you think about before you left, or is this how you wanted things to turn out?”

If you were here, you’d laugh at me, wouldn’t you?

“I’m trying my best to move on. I can laugh and smile again…I finally stopped crying. No more tears, right? But even after all this time, I can’t fly, not yet, so you’ll have to be a little more patient with me. I’ll get there, just not right now. And when I do, you’ll be the first to know.

“By the way, I found your song, ‘I’ll Be With You’? You never cease to amaze me. I’m going to put it in my next CD, I don’t know when that’ll be, but that song will be in there for sure. When’d you write that anyways? Was it during our second date or our third?” He smiled fondly, thinking back about their happier moments.

“I don’t know if I’m ever going to fall in love again, and even if I do, I won’t forget you, ever. I can give you my word on that at least. I’ll keep these precious memories of us with me. Just watch me. I’m going to make it worldwide. So please continue to believe in me from wherever you are.

“That day…when we first met…I think the person who was saved, it was probably me, don’t you think? I mean, if I never met you…I don’t know, that’d be pretty weird. I probably would’ve ended up bitter and paranoid, or the opposite…really trusting and screwed over. I’m pretty sure you were my first real friend, you taught me all this stuff about the world that I would’ve never noticed if it wasn’t for you…you were the person who liked me even when I was being stupid…

“You were the person who kept my first kiss safe…”

He gave a weak, apologetic laugh, “Crap…I don’t think I can stay here much longer before I break my promise and cry again. Sorry, this is as much as I can handle for now. Oh…I almost forgot, these are for you,” he set the rose and card down, “I…I guess I’ll be back again. Next time, I’m going to bring Ryo-chan and Pi, okay?”

The singer got up and smiled softly,

“I’ll be seeing you…”

-------------------------

Hey Jin…I wonder…

-------------------------
As the wind softly ruffled the pedals of the rose, the card laid there, underneath the flower…its crayon drawn hearts and happy faces glowing brightly under the sun.

Dear Kame,

Thank you.

Yours truly,
Akanishi Jin

-------------------------

If I never met you that day, would I have ever stepped out that door?

-------------------------
“Hi! I haven’t seen you around before, why don’t you come out and play? You’re sick? Well that doesn’t really matter you know, fresh air’s supposed to be good for your health! I bet you’d get better if you came out and played! Yea, a lot of the kids tell me you’re weird, but that's okay! What’s your name?

“Kamenashi Kazuya? That’s an interesting name; I think I’m going to call you Kame-chan. Me? I’m Akanishi Jin, I’m fourteen, I live with my parents and my brother, I like pasta and I want to go into the entertainment business. Now that we’re not strangers anymore, why don’t you come out and play?

“…Eh!? You don’t have any friends!? Well that’s alright! I’ll save you from your loneliness! Do you want to know how? From now on, I’m going to be your best-est friend! So come on! Let’s go play! I’ll teach you everything you’ll need to know!

“Why? Do I need really a reason? I like you! I want to be your friend, isn’t that reason enough? I really don’t think you need that great of an explanation to be friends with someone. Rumors? What about them? Do you really think I’m someone who’d believe in stupid rumors? Don’t look at me like that, I really don’t believe in them at all! You’re proof that they’re all false, aren’t you?

“Well, if there are ever any more rumors about Kame-chan, they’ll have to deal with Akanishi Jin! Because Kame-chan’s already a really important person to me…

“Here, take my hand. It’s not girly, just do it! Because this is going to be the start of something new, right? It's a little scary isn't it? That’s okay!

“We’ll take the first step together.”

Epilogue:

A couple months later, Ryo and Pi were running down the halls of the company with large grins on their faces. Shoving their heads and yelling into random rooms. Sometimes they received strange looks, sometimes they received random things being thrown at them and sometimes they got screams. But none of the other peoples’ reactions fazed their ear-to-ear grins.

When they poked their heads into their favorite senpai’s room, Tackey looked over in mock-annoyance, “What is it, Yamapi? Did Nishikido get stuck in a tree again?”

Ryo stuck his tongue out at the elder while Pi shook his head with a happy smile still on his face, “No, Ryo-chan’s safe on the ground with me so you don’t have to go and break your nose again.” This earned him a muffled laugh from everyone else. “Go turn on your TV, Jin’s on! It’s finally being aired!”

The shorter man pushed the other into the room and began ushering him, “Pi, hurry up, I think it’s starting.”

The younger singer hopped into the room, onto the couch, “We’ll just watch it here then.”

Tackey frowned from his makeup table, “Hey, I didn’t say you two could watch with us! Who said we wanted to watch it anyways?”

“Hide-kun…”

He shot a pout in the dancer’s direction, “Why do you always take their side? It's not fair.”

Tsubasa laughed, “You’ll live.”

Ryo turned on the television and took his place next to Yamapi, “it took him long enough, I swear, he was ready to roll over and quit or something, the idiot…”

Pi blinked and looked over, “What are you talking about, Ryo-chan? You were happier about this than any of us.”

“No I wasn't!” The shorter singer yelled and went to turn the volume up.

“…after long months of hiatus, solo artist, Akanishi Jin, is releasing a new single…‘Message for You’. And here he is, Akanishi Jin with ‘I’ll Be With You’!”

-------------------------
While everyone was inside watching the show, Jin made his way down the empty street. It was the middle of the day and everyone was too busy with work or school, or TV to waste their time in a little park like this one.

He gave a small smile at the sight.

Slowly, he made his way to the swings and took a seat. The singer licked his lips and began kicking, the swing giving a soft, protesting creak at first but gave up when he began moving higher.

Jin grinned and looked up at the sky.

“Look Kame, I’m finally flying again…”

Suddenly, his phone rang, he blinked and picked it up, “Jin! Where are you!? Actually, it doesn’t really matter, we’re going to go to Tackey’s to celebrate your single!”

“What!? Why wasn’t I informed of this!? You’re using my place!?”

“Yes we are! We’re going to have this massive cuddling what-fifty-some?”

“Why don’t you just call it a cuddling org-”

“Hurry up stupid Fat Jin! We’re all going to be waiting for you!”

“Yea! So hurry up Jin! We can’t celebrate without you!”

He laughed, “I’ll be there soon, bye.”

-------------------------

You’re doing it Jin…

-------------------------

Yea…I am, aren’t I?

I'm moving on…

-------------------------

So I guess this is really goodbye then…you don't need me anymore…

-------------------------

That's not true.

-------------------------

I’m going to miss you…

-------------------------

Kame…

-------------------------

Goodbye Jin…

-------------------------
It suddenly went quiet.

Jin blinked and looked up when a raindrop hit his head.

“When you move on…I’m probably going to cry…”

He gave a sad smile, “Stupid Kame…” Hopping off the swing, he held his pinky to the sky and blew it a kiss, “we’ll be together again…so don’t cry…”

Then he walked off with his hands in his pockets, humming the melody he knew so well.

消えないこの絆…

-------------------------

…you’re always here by my side,

So don’t say goodbye…

-------------------------

I’ll be seeing you…
