Alpine has two 'big' grocery stores, a Thriftway and a Food Basket. There are two small organic stores, as well, the one my mom works at and the larger one that opened more recently.
Well, the owners of the Thriftway have just bought the Food Basket.
Basically, oh goody, no competition happening in a small town an hour from the nearest other town with a 'big' grocery store. And I would not be surprised if they do start stocking even more organic to finish stomping into things.
No real word from the owners about how they're planning to go forward, they say basically that for now BOTH stores will be run. (Neither is big enough to handle being the only store in town, in terms of parking and stocking space.) But there's a lot of worry about prices jumping, and worry also that they may build some big conglomerate-sized store on the outskirts of town and close down the two in-town things that many citizens can easily walk or bike to.
So, yeah, that's the latest "Big Deal" going on here.
