(no subject)

I need to stop reading the train wreck that is that Loyola professor's 'research' about the community of City of Heroes, and all the HORRIBLE JOURNALISM that it has spawned all over the internet.

The way that so many people are willing to accept his 'research data' and anecdotes and dismiss all naysayers, and claim that online gaming communities are 'going bad' because of him and the article in the NOLA paper that spotlighted him's claims.... it is NOT good for my blood pressure.

I mean, the ass doesn't get permission from his 'social experiment' subjects... right there that's UNETHICAL SCIENCE PEOPLE. He gets his data from a single minority subset of group, and misrepresents what he did. (He doesn't seem to want to own up to actively broadcasting insults at players, etc.)

Instead he and those who believe him say he was oh-so-innocently playing the game 'as intended' and 'winning at any cost' by exploiting NPC drones, and that oh yes, some PVP player who he ganked repeatedly yelling "I AM GOING TO KILL YOU FOR REAL IF YOU DO THAT AGAIN!" is the sign of social armageddon or something.

And no matter how many MMO'ers step up to the plate and post thoughtful, calm, rational "He's not doing this right or representing us right" comments or letters, the result from these so-called journalists is "ZOMG LOOK HOW MESSED UP THESE PEOPLE ARE! JUST LIKE HE SAID!"

/sigh/

so-called journalism, fuckery, mmo's, train wreck
