A while ago I bought Os Mutantes, an album by the
band of the same name because I'd seen them mentioned in the NME when I were a lad. In fact, it was almost two years ago, just as the World Cup was starting and I was looking for Brazilian music to go with the football theme of events.
I gave it a few listens, and it didn't really work for me; I had a football themed compilation which featured tracks like Mas Que Nada and O Rei Pele which were much more appropriate for running around the room shouting GOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!! (not that I got to do that much, given how England played). But it's sat in my iTunes library and stewed away in my head since then, and now that I have tracked down a bit more music from the Tropicalia movement - basically Brazil's answer to the Beatles and the Beach Boys - a psychadelic movement that grew up in response to the dictatorship in Brazil and the british/ US pop explosion of the 60s.
But to return to my orginal point, the album is excellent. It will take time to reprogram your ears, but if you give it time to put down roots you'll be rewarded with a unique aural bloom. It's like the Kinks making deranged records that you can actually dance to, but in Portuguese.
