Life events

So, I certainly enjoy keeping a journal, but lately I've been doing it mostly for life events (which there haven't been many of). Facebook is nice for keeping in touch since it's more universal, but less so for in depth writing (and pulling up old posts isn't convenient either). However, on Saturday I had a nice event which reminded me of times when I would log into live journal. So here I am.

Two summers ago, an old friend from college, Rebecca, invited to a concert she was playing in, although it was outdoors and there was a storm. Her sister (who Rebecca lived with) had hurt her back and was stuck indoors anyway, so Rebecca invited me to their apartment to hang out. Little did I know I was being set up, and it was quite successful. BethAnn, Rebecca's sister happened to be a lovely person. She loves the arts, she's a nurse and is Scientifically literate. She's Jewish (and has a somewhat similar background as me), we've got a similar sense of humor and a never-ending urge to see museums.

As you might imagine, things have been going quite well. In June I moved in with BethAnn, and on Saturday on a trip to the NY Botanical Gardens we became engaged.

While it wasn't a surprise (we brought it up a few weeks ago that we were both ready for that to come up), we decided that it would be a nice day to take a 'picture in front of some flowers' (as we put it to her family, and "a special date with question asking" as I more obviously put it to her. Her mom and sister were with us and we handed them a camera and walked in front of a blooming rhododendron bush.

We took a few photos, and Rebecca mentioned "Hey, this kind of looks like an engagement photo."
"Should it become one?" I replied while looking at an elated girlfriend (who was eagerly shaking her head).

I then took out my grandmother's ring and placed it on her finger (it fit perfectly) and then spent the next few minutes embracing each other (while BethAnn's [very flustered] mother repeated the phrase "oh my gosh" over and over. We sat in the shade and shared the news with the rest of our families over videochat, and spent the rest of the day surrounded by flowers.

There's a bit more to come (why not add another post?) but in short there will be a wedding around thanksgiving in Amherst, and I hope to see many old faces. So that's my good news. Sometimes 1000 words works better in livejournal than a short post with photos, and I'm happy to have a place where writing it down works so well.

Best,
Mike
