Yes, right, I know this, and yet--and yet, this just bothers me.
All right, here's a guy who's spent years building up a close friendship between himself and a scarred, cynical young woman with a profoundly difficult history. She learns to trust him, to the point that she over time even comes to believe in the possibility of "love" being something more complex than a mere biological response. He tries to push for a deeper relationship; she panics; he backpedals immediately and tells her he "has to move on." They part, to spend seven months working apart with no contact. When they return to their normal lives, he comes back supposedly head-over-heels In Love with another woman.
One of two things is possible here.
A) Booth really has moved on and fallen in love with the new woman. This means Brennan was correct to refuse to enter a relationship with him, as his feelings for her were obviously ephemeral and very easily overcome.
B) He hasn't moved on, but is using the new woman to distract himself (or try to convince himself that he's "over" Brennan). This also means Brennan was right to refuse him, because this behavior? Makes Booth kind of an ass.
My 'ship is being torpedoed, you guys. I was at the haunt last night and haven't even seen 6x02 yet, but I've read every synopsis and review posted (there were what is vulgarly known as "a metric fuckton" of them) and I'm frankly not sure I want to watch it now as the general consensus was that it was severely depressing. Do I need an hour of watching Booth be a jerk toward Brennan and Brennan alternate between queen of denial and whipped puppy? No, no, I'm not sure I do. Next week's ep looks largely mindless and stupid, so I may just wait till then. (I really wish the show would decide if it wants to be broad comedy or serious drama; they used to do a much better balancing job, but of late it's just become bipolar.)
Still a fan, still love the characters (no matter how the writers distort them), still haven't given up...but damn. What are they thinking doesn't even begin to cover it.
