Friday Random Notes (Derby/May Eve Edition)

Apr 30, 2010 12:21

* On the horizon: thunderstorms, high winds, flash floods, general wretchedness, so no camping events for us this weekend. For mes amis attending the various festivals, stay as safe and dry as possible until I see you again.

* Makeup primer + mineral foundation = O HAI THAR SKIN! Who knew you could look that good?

* Have I ever mentioned that my stepmother-in-law is a deeply unpleasant person? Beyond the bitterness and bad manners, there's the fact that she seems incapable of talking of anything that doesn't involve some horrible fate befalling one of her many tragic relatives. And yes, she does seem to take a sort of grim relish in the telling. Their backs break and their uteri prolapse, they develop debilitating and disfiguring conditions, they fall off roofs and total cars and fall victim to cancers and conditions of which you've never even heard--and she must tell you all about them! We'd not been in her presence five minutes the other day before she was showing off her latest surgical scars (located nowhere more indiscreet than a foot, mercifully) and telling how one of the aforementioned relatives was dying of incurable lung cancer at a very early age, and had also "just had to have several inches of her COLON taken out." Oh, well, um, that's very, ah, unfortunate, isn't it? OH MY WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE TIME WE ARE VERY LATE FOR A PRESSING APPOINTMENT ANYWHERE THAT YOU AREN'T.

* Note to Bones screenwriters: Yes, OK, we get it, Brennan is socially awkward and out of touch with popular culture to a degree. Please to not be hammering the point home in such a forced fashion anymore, because we get it, and it's feeling quite contrived and annoying. She's not an idiot savant, she's not mentally retarded, she is a psychiatrically injured scientist with a very high IQ and multiple degrees and a couple of novels on the NYT best-seller list. God damn it, a woman who can sing Foreigner songs (however off-key) and play guitar has certainly heard of LED FREAKING ZEPPLIN, so don't insult the viewers by having her behave otherwise. Seriously. (Other than that, last night's episode was golden, and the obligatory Booth-and-Brennan scene at the end made up for A LOT.)

* Attention Derby fans: tomorrow is going to suck prodigiously. Hope your horse likes playing in the mud!

* Also, a happy Beltane (or Samhain, depending on where you are) to those of you who celebrate.

i may not be normal, fandom, random
