The Omnivore's Hundred Instructions:
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
(go to the original post for Wikipedia links if you don't know what something is)
4) italicize ones you haven't eaten but WANT TO TRY
5) Leave the ones you haven't tried, but are indifferent about
1. Venison
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare
5. Crocodile
6. Black pudding
7. Cheese fondue
8. Carp -- how is this not the same as a catfish? *shrugs*
9. Borscht -- I tried a spoonful of it. Bleah. I haven't yet met a beet I liked. I expect they'd even taste bad to me deep fried.
10. Baba ghanoush
11. Calamari
12. Pho -- only if (by some miracle) there's no cilantro in it. Cilantro is one of the few foods I truly despise. Which is weird because I love coriander seeds.
13. PB&J sandwich
14. Aloo gobi
15. Hot dog from a street cart
16. Epoisses -- I suspect this is the infamous "Burgundian butt-cheese" which 2 of my friends came home from France complaining about. ;-)
17. Black truffle
18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes
19. Steamed pork buns
20. Pistachio ice cream
21. Heirloom tomatoes -- heck, yeah. I once grew like 15 different varieties one year during my mad gardening days.
22. Fresh wild berries
23. Foie gras
24. Rice and beans
25. Brawn, or head cheese
26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper -- in my experience, 98% of the people who eat these raw are just trying to prove they have a more acute case of testosterone poisoning than the other guys.
27. Dulce de leche
28. Oysters
29. Baklava
30. Bagna cauda
31. Wasabi peas
32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl -- Little Whale Cove Inn, outside Lincoln City, Oregon. Sigh.
33. Salted lassi
34. Sauerkraut
35. Root beer float -- normally I like anything with ice cream in it, but root beer is only slightly less objectionable than cilantro
36. Cognac with a fat cigar
37. Clotted cream tea -- I'm not sure about this. Does this mean "tea" as in that lovely 4 pm meal where you have tea and biscuits and scones with clotted cream on them? If so, then yes.
38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O -- Jell-O shots! Woot!
39. Gumbo
40. Oxtail
41. Curried goat
42. Whole insects -- I ate a fried grasshopper once, and some chocolate covered ants. I guess that counts.
43. Phaal - I once sat next to someone eating it, does that count?
44. Goat’s milk
45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/$120 or more
46. Fugu -- I like sushi but I'm not that much of a gambler
47. Chicken tikka masala
48. Eel
49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut
50. Sea urchin -- I've smelled a dead seal rotting on a beach before. This didn't smell much different. So... no.
51. Prickly pear -- both the pads (nopales) and the fruits (tuna)
52. Umeboshi -- I've had the dried, salted ones, but not the pickled ones
53. Abalone
54. Paneer
55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal
56. Spaetzle
57. Dirty gin martini
58. Beer above 8% ABV -- if lambic counts, then yes
59. Poutine -- one of my friends just got to try this! Yet another reason to go to Canada.
60. Carob chips
61. S’mores
62. Sweetbreads
63. Kaolin -- only as Kaopectate. And I don't consider that a food.
64. Currywurst
65. Durian
66. Frogs’ legs -- only once. Never again unless I'm starving. It tastes like it can't decide whether it's fish or chicken. That plus the sliminess make it... just disturbing.
67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake
68. Haggis -- it was actually quite good; one of the spicier things I had to eat in Scotland.
69. Fried plantain
70. Chitterlings, or andouillette
71. Gazpacho
72. Caviar and blini
73. Louche absinthe
74. Gjetost, or brunost -- I love this stuff!
75. Roadkill
76. Baijiu
77. Hostess Fruit Pie
78. Snail
79. Lapsang souchong
80. Bellini
81. Tom yum
82. Eggs Benedict
83. Pocky
84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant
85. Kobe beef
86. Hare
87. Goulash
88. Flowers -- roses, nasturtiums, calendula, clove pinks... uhm, yeah, lots of 'em
89. Horse
90. Criollo chocolate -- if this just means chocolate from South America, then yes. But I couldn't find what this actually is.
91. Spam
92. Soft shell crab
93. Rose harissa -- harissa, yes, but not with roses. Odd, I'd think their flavor would be completely overcome by the peppers.
94. Catfish
95. Mole poblano
96. Bagel and lox
97. Lobster Thermidor
98. Polenta
99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee
100. Snake
Total: 75/100
Now I'm all hungry....
