I was hangin' with Nate at Palio last night and met his friends Bax and Amber. They have all hiked "The Camino", an apparently very famous pilgrimage trail across Spain. They were telling great stories about meeting people from all over the world and the wacky kind of travel stories that come up when you're on the road for any amount of time. I was enthralled by their stories, but in the end I had one burning question keeping me from wanting to dive into such an adventure myself: Why in the world would anyone want to walk that much?
This is the reason that I will never be a mountain man. I enjoy a good hike now and again, but if I could travel around the world on a flying couch, I would do it. Honestly, with as little exercise as I get and the way I eat, my life expectancy is not the longest. So, I intend on making every minute of that count in serving in the middle of incredible adventure. But, those adventures will mostly be by plane, train, and automobile.
After that conversation we switched to talking about what's going on the world. Folks, in case you have been caught up in school or work and not taken the time to keep up with news--things are messed up! They always are, and I'm not so much surprised as overwhelmed by the massive amounts of lives effected by the various things happening on the six inhabited continents. The more that I speak the things going on out loud, the more weighty they feel. Unfortunately, the US seems to be intimately involved or even the cause of these events, and it's hard to think about traveling around the world being labeled "American".
Anyway, I head overseas in about seven weeks. That is, quite simply, crazy. There is much that still needs to fall into place, but I'm getting more excited everyday as I try to picture what this summer will be like. I've never been out of the country for more than a month, so this is the next step toward maybe living overseas on a more permanent basis. I'm curious to see how that all unfolds.
