The wintery weekend was wonderful...

Good times in semi-rural Central Washington this weekend with Ross, Bitta, and the lovely ladies of Intermountain Americorps. Seriously, if you live anywhere within six hours of the WA Hwy 17/Grand Coulee area, you should drive that way and do some hiking. Beautiful vistas and just a peaceful atmosphere.

At the Fire and Ice Festival in Chelan, WA I participated in a keg toss (26'3"), but came nowhere near the winner (31'10" or some such nonsense), voted for a snow sculpture, watched a few friends do a polar plunge into frigid water (the temperature of which I overheard was in the low 40s), got ashed by a bonfire made of probably 30-50 discarded Christmas trees, saw an impressive fireworks display and a parade of lights, and talked about how to fight poverty at the table of a pizza joint where the Seahawks playoff game was playing. I also played in snow for the first time since December 2004, got yelled at to get off private property by a guy on a snow mobile, soaked my feet in a hot tub, ate the best biscuits I've had since I left the south, and sang "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Let's Stay Together" during karaoke at a bar. People actually came out and danced and eventually applauded on "Let's Stay Together". My ego was unbearable for the rest of the night.

I'd love to post pictures, but have no digital camera and am a little technologically ignorant on how to scan pictures in and get them onto these blogs. Oh well. Come visit me and I'll show you the pictures as well as a building that has pillars painted with hippos in ballerina outfits. These are the wonders that are Portland, Oregon.

Tonight I start a weekly study of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Life Together with my bros Ross and Nate. As you might guess, study will be accompanied by the mass consumption of vitals and prodigious amounts of laughter. Wish you could come.

Lots of serious stuff on my mind lately, including how narrative and story can be used for healing in people's lives and in communities. I'll have to take some time to formulate those thoughts into coherent communication.

School starts on Monday, so this week will consist of much reading on the things I wanted to get in before I had homework assignments. If it's sunny where you are, enjoy it. Rain is good for reading and coffee, but it does in fact get old. Nonetheless, I love Portland. Peace.
