Ever wonder just what all that anime watching, manga reading and convention going gets you for your buck? Why, an education of course! Since I have to keep a log of the kids' educational activities I recently spent some time coming up with educationese for how we spent some of our time in the last few months.
WATCHING RUROUNI KENSHIN
Social Studies: 19th century Japanese history and culture; including foods, clothing styles, martial arts, children's games, medical practices, the role of women in society and sumo wrestling
Geography: locations of Japan, Tokyo and Kyoto
Math: If there were 50 Shinsengumi during the revolution and the Ishin Shishi killed 28, 15 were required to commit seppuku because of code violations, one became a temple security guard, one joined the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, and one left to pursue an independant asassination career, how many are remaining to provide new plot lines for the show?
READING YOTSUBA&!
Social Studies: modern Japanese culture and customs; including foods, festivals, transportation, diversity in family life and proper vs. improper techniques for asking out the girl of your dreams (hint: don't use a 6yo as your go-between)
Science: cicaeda behavior and trapping techniques; the effects of air conditioning use on global warming
Language: discerning the meaning of the manga's title, learning to read the pages from right to left
ATTENDING CONVENTIONS
Social Studies: modern Japanese and American visual culture; public speaking
Math: budgeting for the creation/purchase of materials for costumes for 3 people with only $20; estimating whether $10 of gas will be enough to get back home
P.E.: standing in line, shoving in line, defending one's position in line, dancing and walking while wearing complex costume apparatus
Art: taking photos of other people's costumes; creating accurate costumes; sewing and fitting costumes using only materials that can be found in the garage or purchased at Goodwill or the Dollar Store
Critical Thinking: coming up with creative ways to repair costumes which have been ripped or stepped on or otherwise damaged using only scotch tape, paper towels and safety pins
