Willimantic frog message

Willimantic (the "city" of the township of Windham) has an excellent Food Co-op, of which I have been a member for many years. Early in the current crisis, they closed to the public and offered curbside pick-up. I have been visiting once a week, the only shopping I've done since March 9.

Windham's claim to fame is the Colonial-era Famous Frog Fight, a true story that--as Tolkien would say--grew in the telling. During the French and Indian War, when no French nor Indians invaded the Connecticut colony, the nervous townsfolk of Windham mustered one night on the Town Green, fearing invasion. The militia stood to arms, guns were fired. In the morning, corpses of frogs littered the ground. The theory was that a drought had dried their pond and the bullfrogs loud cries as they "migrated" were the cause of the alarm. Word spread more quickly than one would imagine, and the town became the laughing-stock of the colony. After the Revolution, they decided to own their disgrace and put a frog on the Town Seal. Some 20 years ago, Willimantic put giant bronze golden-eyed frogs on the new bridge.

And now, they are protected.
