One interpretation of the Mayan Calendars says the end of the world will come on Dec. 21st 2012. Supposedly modern scholars say that was a misinterpretation, but it's pretty big among the superstitious and with pop culture (there's a new John Cusak movie about it, but it's sci-fi).
Then again, most of the Mayans were wiped out by the Conquistadors. I wonder if their calendars showed THAT one coming?
I had a friend that made me watch this half hour youtube documentary on it, and I had to admit it was compelling. But it reminded me of a quote from the movie Pi.
"You want to find the number 216 in the world, you will be able to find it everywhere. 216 steps from a mere street corner to your front door. 216 seconds you spend riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out and find that thing everywhere."
And I also made the point, if they were so smart how come they were wiped out? I just didn't realize there was psuedo-religious following.
