Random Ramblings on Dragon*Con

I came back from Dragon*Con yesterday and am off work today. I knew I'd need a day to rest and decompress. Hoo hah, did I call that one.

The pre-con was great. Two friends I almost never get to see, lartist and bamfette, flew in and stayed ay my house for a little before we went down to the hotel. Bamfette and I roomed together in one of the Hyatt towers. Those rooms only have one bed, and normally that arrangement would not be so great, but they are ginormous beds and so hard that if one person shifts it doesn't jiggle the other. Seriously, they're really hard. I tried to bounce a quarter off one and it got dented. Being in the tower also meant that we didn't have to use the atrium elevators. We rarely had to wait longer than a minute for elevators! Amazing!

We went to some panels. Two voice acting panels - with mostly the same people, leading to deja vu. And both panels were listed on both the anime and animation tracks, so the program had four listings. We also went to the "An Hour With Space Ghost" panel, in which they shove George Lowe into a tiny, crowded room, give him a mike, and let him run wild for an hour. Funny stuff. ("I kid! I'm kidding!") Also saw the Cinematic Titanic panel, and now that I know what that's about I'm going to have to start following it.

Went to RHPS, which for once was on Saturday Night instead of Sunday. There were some spectacular glitches with the DVD, but otherwise it was quite a good show. The sound was up so earsplittingly loud it drowned out the APA; I had to scream at the top of my lungs to be heard by the people around me, who didn't even try to compete with the speakers.

Bought not a lot of stuff. Got an LICD posted featuting the main cast playing strip poker, and you don't want to know how Richard anted up. A flip-top for my PS2, a few books, not much else. Got lots of freebies, including a paperback book and some nice sword pins for my Frank jacket.

Wore my ReBoot pin everywhere. That led to a lot of conversations about the ReBoot revival. Most people were startled, but a very few already knew about it. I gave one of my pins to a fan who was so intense, well, she just seemed to deserve it, y'know?

Did the costume thang. On Friday evening I walked around a bit in my denim kimono. On Saturday I put on my Frank gear and totally photo-whored. Gotta tell you, I loved the attention. I even entered the hall costume contest. I saw some other great costumes, but what really stood out for me was a group of 4 fans, including 3 wearing outfits based on Darkwing Duck, Negaduck, and Launchpad McQuack. I went over and complimented them and thanked them for representin', and, guess what, they're longtime DWD fans who know Lar and are familiar with my website. Hee hee! Man, they made me wish I had a camera.

Watched the Dawn Costume Contest and Masquerades. The Dawn contest wasn't as big a train wreck as it has been, and at least it was short. There were maybe 3 good costumes and the rest were just "stick a rose on it and paint around one eye and it's Dawn" junk. The Masquerade wasn't as good or as bad as previous years, and I'm getting tired of the guy who puts swords on his feet and wriccles on the floor. Yes, he's good, but he does the same exact bloody thing every year and it's gotten old. The most awesome moment came when they inserted a rickroll into "Duck Dodgers in the 24th-and-a-Half Century." Truly a LOL moment.

I got a prize in the hall costume contest. "Best Movie Character." Huh! I guess all the Jack Sparrows must have split the vote, giving me a chance.

While resting in the hotel we watched some DVDs, courtesy of a cheap portable DVD player and a TV that accepts RCA inputs. We saw this and that - Bill Plympton, ReBoot, MOTU, and old '50s sex ed films. Yes, this is what happens when I grab a few DVDs at the last minute.

Those who know me might not believe this, but I don't talk that much in real life. So, when I'm around friends for a long period of time and actually talk a lot, it has an effect on my throat. When I get hoarse my voice lowers. It was noticeable for most of the con, but the morning after RHPS I sounded like I was channeling Bea Arthur.

I don't want to think of all the junk food I ate at the food court. I feel like I have to live on broccoli for a week. I even dreamt about broccoli one night.

*Yawn* Gonna co decompress some more now.
