Avatar

I've watched it twice in 3D. Not because I love it like crazy, simply because it's the holidays and I have nothing to do and friends keep asking me to watch Avatar. Plus, the first time I watched it, Nicholas kept distracting me and I did find in the 2nd viewing that I missed some pretty important stuff, like the whole legend about Toruk Makto, at least I think that's pretty important.

All in all, I think it's an absolutely breathtaking visual ride. Especially if you watch it in blitzmegaplex's RealD. Yes, the plot is mediocre, as predictable as a Disney classic, and nowhere near original as I can see similarities from Dances With Wolves, Pocahontas, The Last of the Mohicans, Surrogates, Independence Day... I could go on. Typical James Cameron. Big Huge movie, mediocre (if not bad) dialogue. Just like Titanic.

BUT...

Does it matter?

Not really.

I have to applaud James Cameron for creating this movie with such state-of-the-art animation that made the Na'vi seem SO REAL. All the art direction, the cinematography, the whole world in Avatar was done in such intricate detail, it's amazing, really. He created an insane visual feast that is Pandora.

And it's sort of like a message movie, after all. Like District 9 symbolizes racism and apartheid, Avatar speaks of nature-destroying humans. And it's really interesting how the typical roles of humans and aliens are completely upside-down in this case.

Ah yes, of course, Sam Worthington is absolutely delicious too. Somehow he's just not my type though. I'm just baffled at how lucky he is. Sure, he's been in Hollywood for awhile, but below our radar until Terminator Salvation. Suddenly he's swimming with the big fish all around. Avatar, Clash of the Titans remake, which, by the way, I CAN'T WAIT TO WATCH as the original was one of my most favorite movies as a child. I even got the DVD. Harry Hamlin in a skimpy mini skirt is a hoot.

Although, redevilica told me that Indonesian cinema censored the love scene (she's seen it first in Singapore), which isn't even anything explicit really. Kissing aliens are too obscene for Indonesian Censor Board? Sure. Violence OK, sex not OK. That's just the way it is :P
