I feel like I have been making some pretty good choices as far as seeing films in theaters lately. I was on a several month dry spell and decided to break it while the getting was good.
No Country for Old Men is a fantastic film. It's my pick for best picture this year. It's a very quiet film that forces you to think. Sometimes when doing a new physical activity, people say they hurt in places they didn't ever before. This film does that to my brain. The good pain that comes with working a new area. The casting is great too. Every one of the leads gives me the feeling that this was a role they were born to play. Hot damn. I'm seeing it again to-nite.
Juno was something I knew relatively little about when I went in, which is weird. I tend to read up on movies at least a little before I go and see them. This was good. Funny, emotional, and ultimately heart-warming. Not one of my all time favorites, but highly enjoyable.
Cloverfield made me sick. The shaky cam did, at least. They could have made it less shaky and it wouldn't have hurt the feel. I don't easily get nauseous from that kind of thing, but this did it. I mean, I saw the last Bourne movie hungover and I felt fine. Geeze. The rest of the film was okay. Very gripping. Monster was somewhat disappointing, but very effective. I think I'll have to watch it again on a much smaller screen.
There Will Be Blood was something I knew nothing about until I saw the trailer before No Country for Old Men. Since then, I have been getting more and more excited about seeing it. It is a very brutal film, mostly because it winds you so tight that even the smallest thing will jar you violently. The music was incredible for that purpose. How the score missed out on an Oscar nod, I'll never know. It was penned by the guitarist from Radiohead, in case any of you were interested. The acting was also top notch. I look forward to seeing it again. A close second in my top films of the year.
Well, that's all for now. I might make a post later about how my roommate is a lying snake trying to ruin my reputation with pictures of me on his LJ. Or maybe I will reveal just how into pro-wrestling I have gotten in a multi-page write up of the Royal Rumble and my feelings on it. The horror, the horror. For you.
