Captain Jack -- Start of series, I knew him from Doctor Who, of course. I like seeing a more serious side of him here, though. The best thing was getting to see glimpes of his past and his emotions. When you first meet him, in Doctor Who, he's more glamour than real person and that, well, annoyed me. Thankfully, here we get to see him and his sometimes irrational decisions, making him more likeable, imho.
Gwen -- Start of series, I kinda like her, but I'm tempted to shout to her "why do you always touch stuff of which you don't know what it's gonna do?" Throughout the series I like how she keeps the traits that, basically, got her the job. I like that she's stubborn, does things even though she knows she shouldn't and will defy the others in the team. I also like how she's striking up a friendship of sorts with Toshiko. I like that Gwen is made human.
Toshiko -- Start of series, she's so quiet. But oh, how I like how she changes towards the end of the series! I love how she seems so quiet and, well, meek, but shows her spine as the series goes on. In fact, I'm now very curious what the next series will bring her and, while I know what'll happen to her, I do hope she'll have some good stuff coming to her before that happens.
Owen -- Start of the series, I am not liking him. I like how he changes after the Diana episode, although he's still not my favourite. Most of the series does not change my mind, unfortunately, although the Diana phase shows a more approachable side of him. And omg in the final ep... well, that certainly endeared him more to me...
Ianto -- Start of series, we don't get to see much of him. But I like how he's more involved with their actions towards the end of the series. He feels more like a team member instead of their 'admin'. I like how he can have some lovely one-liners, can disapprove quite visually but will try his best for the team.

I like seeing the hint so what later'll become Jack/Ianto ;-) Ooooh - the stopwatch comment!!! *grins* I love how this was played out towards the end of the series and I'm curious after series 2 and how this'll return in it.
The Gwen/Owen thing is and isn't a surprise. Still not sure if I like Owen, though. Gwen is interesting and I'm glad she's not a Mary Sue *nods* I'm growing to like her more and more, including her faults.
I loved the ep with Toshiko and Mary - it was nice seeing a bit more of Tosh in action and her side of things. I loved Tosh in the last two episodes! Finally some spunk!

So, all in all. I didn't have the instant!love for this show like I did for Doctor Who. To be honest, I think I would've been surprised if that had happened. The show took quite a bit to grow on me and for me learn to like and/or appreciate the characters. This, on the other hand, shows that these characters have a bit of depth and real characterizations which is a good thing. Plus, Doctor Who has only a few characters that are constantly 'on screen' and Torchwood has way more and I took that as a sigh that it'd take longer for them to show sides of each of the characters. I still feel like we haven't seen all of it and I quite like that. More to discover in the next series...
