We have hamsters all clear!!!
We've been let back in, the flat stinks, is covered in soot, and to put it in savage's words, we have a good haze for lighting...
Thankfully Savage was on his way home when it happened, and was able to give the firemen his keys, so they didn't break the door in.
There's nothing quite as scary as going to investigate the fire alarm of the flat below and finding smoke billowing into the flat, and touching the front door only to find it baking hot.
I have to admit to being scared shitless, but at least I could remember the drill.
I need to find out from the letting agency what they want to do about the fact the walls in the hall are now grey, and the carpet is possibly ruined. I'm guessing they'll want to inspect the damage, but be damned if I'm forfeiting my holiday for them to do so....
Thankfully closing all the fire doors in the flat and covering the bottoms before shutting myself in the living room has meant that the smoke damage in the bedrooms isn't as bad as I thought. We may be doing Whitby smelling of smoke, but at least it's not a total loss :)
I've spent a lot of time jibbering at the red cross people. The firemen were really great. Obviously, we had to wait outside, and ended up talking to one of the shop assistants who has me on camera phone desperately trying to get the living room window open. We are never locking the upper glazing again!!!
Remind me to buy the Edinburgh evening news. What a way to start a holiday!!!
