I agree that even in canon, Rodney is the talker, but I wonder about his ability to actually ask for what he wants. That's why...
he makes it happen, he chases the words out of Rodney's mouth, with kisses, with licks and with tender bites; always Rodney spill his *secret* in a whimper of desire, and always John is there to catch him.
...this is so lovely. Because I can really see that. As long as John makes Rodney feel safe in spilling those secrets - that John's open and isn't going to judge him - I can see Rodney finally letting go and asking.
But I also like the reverse... a Rodney who can coax the words from John, precisely because John uses so few of them. And a Rodney who gets pleasure by John verbalizing his desires (however short and to the point that might be). It's wonderful that these characters are so 'bendable' - I can really see it happening both ways.
I think the fact that people can imagine them be one thing and then the complete opposite is something of a gift.
Every week there are things I read here I would never have thought of on my own. Some that don't agree with me, but some that make me think outside of my personal boundaries and learn to appreciate something good and new:).
Saying that, we could also have an talkative John in the bedroom. A John who lets go of the control he keeps on his words usually because he knows that with Rodney he's safe. Whatever he says, even if it's the wrong thing at the wrong time, it won't matter, because Rodney's done that a hundred times already. And so when he closes the door behind him he talks and he asks Rodney for whatever he wants that evening. Sometimes Rodney will give it to him, and sometimes Rodney had his own idea before John got there, so they will talk and try to convince the other that their idea was obviously the best. In any case it always ends up in a very mutual satisfaction :D
You know, I've never looked at it that way, and that's a really good way to look at it. Especially when it's John. Perhaps that's why I had so much trouble with it. Thank you!
Um. I'm just going to jump in at the deep end.... This is what came to mind re John and dirty talk.
The first time John says, "So fucking good, how hard you are for me," before he sucks Rodney's dick down, Rodney's surprised. They've been having sex for two months, and it's always been furtive and silent. Right when Rodney's breathing speeds up and he gets that feeling, that roller coaster at the top feeling of just a little more before free-fall, John pulls off but keeps his mouth on Rodney's dick. "I want your come all over me," John says, and he really does sound like he's desperate for it. "I want it hot on my chest and in my hair and I want you to fill my mouth so much I can't hold it all in, Rodney -- "
Rodney can't say a damn thing, he just grabs John by the hair and gets his dick back in John's wet, perfect, dirty mouth. John moans and shivers and swallows, and Rodney's right there, past the point of no return. He jerks John's head back and paints his face and feels like he's floating away as he watches John kneel,
( ... )
OMG! And to think it was cold in here not five minutes ago. *fans* I lost count at how many buttons this pushed, but trust me... it's all good. I particularly like Rodney being kind of undone by it once John got the words out, and the words... But I really loved Rodney being demanding then waiting for more. Just so perfect!
I've never thought about things like this before, but:
Would it be sad if Rodney was not talkative in the bedroom *because* John wasn't talkative? Like, Rodney thinks John just needs things quiet or something.
I think I've read fics like that in the past and that particular fic did it so well that it didn't feel sad at all, because silence was something that Rodney gave to John with love, not something he did despite himself, and it made their love making all the more tender for all the things they were transforming from words to touches <3.
I'll agree with the others here with regard to Rodney's motives - assuming that's what John wanted. But what if John wanted, what he needed, was someone else to be the talkative one. If the sound of Rodney's voice turned him on, especially when Rodney was at a point he seemed to lose it. I'm thinking it would probably be something John wouldn't 'ask' for, but Rodney would be able to pick up on. And I do think that they would develop their own 'language' of sorts with non-verbal cues and touches as well.
I'm posting this sound clip I found on Gateworld. It was originally posted there by PuddleJumper42. I think Joe's sexy voice fits the prompt for this week nicely :)

Rodney knows exactly what that means.

A quiet Rodney, keeping things in, bottling his natural flow of words like John might be skittish and flinch away if he said too much.
Or possibly Rodney has studied the language of John so well he knows how to speak to him with his touch.
Soft kisses against John's throat, a caress of fingertips across a collarbone, his mouth hot and generous as he sucks down John's cock...
We should study this further.
