I gave up on the show after I read halfway through the script. It felt like the show was trying to fit a round peg into square hole. Also I'm not even sure if what WW does can even be defined as 'crime fighting'; she's the atypical superhero and her window of opportunity is frankly much larger than other superheroes considering how her origin demands that she be more proactive than other normal heroes.
Also, man you did in an infinitely better job ranting on this and all did was throw a tantrum when writing about a similar topic ame up. It seems that e even if I do become angry when topics like this come up, I can't really substitute for the actual experience and everything of having to grow up with it. I know, I'm being Captain Obvious but you actually made a point while all I did was disappear up my own ass.
-Though I want to clarify, most of the story for WW was written by a group of men. Gail Simone, at best, I think provided the skeleton of the story. I want to speak more the Animated Movie line but I think I’ll just drop this link here regarding my thoughts. Regarding female characters; I never really understood this whole ‘women need romance’, ‘men can’t relate to strong women’, ‘women can’t lead their own shows’ or generally this whole minimizing and ‘boxing in’ of female characters . All of which I have come to refer to as ‘the cootie syndrome’. Sure I am a male and I have been blinded by privilege at times and have said some sexist/misogynistic stuff in the past but even at my ‘girl’s are ewww’ stage I used to secretly watch Cardcaptor Sakura every day, I used to regularly read Spider-girl, I threw a massive bitchfest at 11 when Digimon 2 made Matt/Sora canon*, stopped watching Pokemon after Misty left**, still trying to find the right words for a rant on how they treated Gwen/Charmcaster in Ben 10: Alien Force and had enough sense even when I was 7 to not go ‘boy s club!’ when I saw a fellow classmate join our ‘unofficial comics club’ at club at school. Having grown up with all that (plus some heavy wacks on the head with the clue-bat) I never understood people like this.
In fact the more I think about it, the more I feel that I’m part of the most insecure gender on the planet and we are likely to be even more begrudging at the girth of another man’s man-liness than what is stereotypically believed of women when it comes to materialistic possessions.
*Tai/Sora for evur!!! >:I
**because honestly that was one of the few times I wanted the romance to happen. I didn't know how much I liked the character until that episode aired.
That's true, she does do a lot beyond just fighting crime. The problem is that the scope of that is almost all stuff that gets handled really badly in mainstream media anyway. If she stuck to mostly just fighting crime, I'd honestly be okay with that just to avoid the pain of watching them fuck up other stuff. And, I mean, I say "fighting crime" in the "goes on comic book super hero adventures" sense, so crime is a very, uh...broad term here. Sometimes crime might be sea monsters.
And in regards to the write-up - it took a while. I have to work through my initial reaction of WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH and then come up with something coherent.
Also, I gotta agree, men in general are terribly insecure because masculinity is based around achievable ideals (unlike women, where the feminine ideal is just more or less out of the reach of anyone who wants to actually live any kind of a normal, productive life) but incredibly narrow and restrictive ones. And, I mean, that's kind of one of the points of feminism (for me at least) that the patriarchal power structure /hurts men too/. They just come out with the most bonuses in the end and of course the whole system is set up to be self-sustaining so they're encouraged to take the bonuses and run, without considering what they're giving up. Or at least that's how it seems to me from the lady side of the force.
Usually I define crime as in hoodlums, bank robberies, pick pockets, hence why I keep going 'uhh.huh' when WW and crime fighting keeps coming up. When I first heard of the project I thought Diana was going to be running a Woman's Shelter or a charity organization. I mean that made sense right? Though their thoughts apparently didn't flow that way.
Next time, I should remember to control my rage before typing in a post instead of splaying it all over the screen.
I think there is a lot of truth to what you say here, especially given my own experiences where I have been thought of as being lesser because I did not fit into the stereotypical idea of man-liness. Restrictive is probably the best word for it given the number of people who would forsake 'vulnerability' just to look cool.
Also the ending to Digimon season 2 was THE MOST BULLSHIT, WTF WAS THAT CRAP? 8| Daisuke and Ken were obviously mean to be together. Gawd, Digimon...brings back meeeeeeemoriesssss. Also I actually really liked what I saw of the third season, I thought the girl in it was actually really well done, though I didn't see the whole thing, so who knows?
I can only recall the series through my nostalgia filters when I watched it as a kid so from what I remember; the first Digimon series was a fucking awesome tale about of a bunch of kids getting trapped in a mysterious world and how they deal with it.
The second series was just crappy, suddenly everyone was older, which I frankly didn't mind but all the new ones WERE ACTING EXACTLY LIKE THE OLD GUYS WITH A FEW DIFFERENCES. Also that younger girl who was more interesting the first series, somehow became a one dimensional wallpaper. There were just many under-developed characters,under-developed plots and..and..WHAT THE FUCK WAS UP WITH PAIRING WITH MATT WITH SORA WHEN TAI RISKED HIS ASS TRYING TO SAVE HER AND MATT/SORA HARDLY INTERACTED WITH EACH OTHER? HOW??!. Also, when they revealed that the main bad guy from the previous show was the final villain, it drove me nuts, I actually shut off the tv then.
Also at the end everyone MARRIED EACH OTHER AND HAD KIDS, THAT LOOKED LIKE EXACTLY LIKE THEIR PARENTS BUT WITH A FEW DIFFERENCES THAT IMMESNELY CREEPED OUT MY 10 YEAR OLD MIND AND THEY WERE SENDING THEIR KIDS INTO THE WILD THAT NEARLY KILLED THEM WHEN THEY WERE KIDS. ALSO NOW THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS WERE NOW EVEN OLDER AND WE CAN'T HAVE ANOTHER AWESOME SERIES BECAUSE THEY ARE NOW MUCH OLDER.
So yes, that's most of what I remember from Digimon. I don't really plan to re-watch it thought since I want to keep that 'nostalgic image' in my mind safe for now.
