I'm basking here. This is me, basking in this lovely story. You've got both characters down to a T. I particularly like this bit: "Pretty much all of it," Vinnie said. "This is me, Sonny - there's no secret Vinnie you never got to see. Lies work better if there's truth behind them, you know? It's all real. The prison time, too." He shrugged. "All twelve months of it." because of course that's what Sonny would worry about. "So what about this other Vinnie, the one I don't know? What's he like, huh?" I truly believe the realization that Vinnie was a lie had a lot to do with Sonny's date with the fusebox.

Yeah, I really think that must have hit Sonny so hard. He doesn't really have any other friends! His brother's dead, and everyone else he's even slightly close to is either a mob boss who'd stab him in the back without a second thought if the opportunity presented itself, or someone trying to suck up to him. Vinnie is pretty much the only one who likes him for his sake, the only one he can trust, and then that turns out o be a lie too. Ow.

Or dead! I think it really hit me the last time I watched the arc how many deaths there are around Sonny. All those guys in the pilot, they're going to a roast for a guy who's got cancer (in New Blood) & Chook OD's, Lorenzo's killed--

Sonny is so very much alone, of course he clung to Vinnie.

Before I even read the story I just want to say that "Wiseguy" was my first fandom - although I had no idea what a fandom was and had no contact with others who loved the show! I remember being so in love with Sonny (and Vinnie, too) that I'd talk in my head for each of them, never writing anything down, just ... talking in my head.... Smiles fondly.... What a great show this is! And talk about subtexty slash....
