Tomorrow's going to be my first 24 hour shift. Between about 6 PM and 8 AM, I'm going to be the only doctor in the hospital.
I'm both excited and a little nervous. I've only been working as a doctor for a little more than three months. There's things I know I don't know, and more importantly, there's things I won't realize I don't know until the moment I really need to know them. I've never handled a heart attack or a stroke on my own. I've never even seen anyone having a seizure. The emergency response team is seven minutes away, and I can call my boss at any time (After 11 PM or so, I better have a REALLY GOOD reason for calling, though), but it's still a big responsibility, and seven minutes is a surprisingly long time when things are going that badly wrong.
If things go well, I'm going to be quite bored for a while, and then I'm going to sleep for a while. If things go badly, I'm just hoping it's going to be a type of bad I've handled before. Keep your fingers crossed!
