I was watching The Cube tonight, partly for David Hewlett, but mostly because of the positive reviews. They were right, too - this is the best movie I’ve seen in a long time. If you like the thriller/horror genre at all, give this one a chance.
It’s not the Scream kind of horror (well, for the most part - there was one scene that made me look away, but I’m a wuss when it comes to horror movies.), it’s the more subtle, psychological kind - the movie manages to convey amazingly well the kind of panic you’d feel, trapped in a deadly maze, with your companions dying one by one and starting to freak out in potentially deadly ways.
On the other hand, The Cube proved to me once again that I don’t like actors but characters. No matter how much I’m in slashy lust with David Hewlett as Rodney McKay, as David Worth he didn’t do anything for me at all. Well, there was some residual sympathy - I probably liked David Worth a little better than I might have if I he hadn’t been played by Hewlett, because he wasn’t all that much of a sympathetic character here, but nothing compared to the way I love to watch Rodney. I was kind of expecting him to start babbling or complaining or coming up with a brilliant solution any minute now, the way Rodney would have done.
I wonder if that prime/not prime game they play on Atlantis was inspired by this movie. It seems like kind of a big coincidence, considering that Hewlett stars in both. (Can anyone tell me what episode prime/not prime is from, anyway? I’ve only ever seen it in fanfic, but I don’t think it’s fanon, is it?)
